Sleep lab study finds sleeping with a light on harms heart health

Researchers from Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine have found sleeping in a moderately lit room can potentially harm a person’s cardiometabolic health. The study saw just one night of sleep in a room with moderate ambient light incr… Continue reading Sleep lab study finds sleeping with a light on harms heart health

Brain cells behind pre-sleep behaviors found, giving hope to insomniacs

What is your pre-bedtime routine? Drink a glass of milk, clean your teeth, prepare your bed? Studies have found many animals engage in habitual behaviors before sleep, but until now researchers have not known the neurobiological mechanisms that are act… Continue reading Brain cells behind pre-sleep behaviors found, giving hope to insomniacs

New sleep study suggests DNA repair protein tells us we’re tired

Birds do it. Bees do it. Anything with even a rudimentary nervous system does it. Sleep is a crucial biological phase, but exactly why we need it remains mysterious. Now a study has uncovered a new piece of the puzzle, finding that a protein involved i… Continue reading New sleep study suggests DNA repair protein tells us we’re tired

Short sleep durations in midlife linked to dementia later in life

A long-term study found persistent sleep durations of less than six hours in middle age were linked with a 30-percent increased risk of developing dementia later in life

A new long-term observational study is reporting a link between short sleep durations of under six hours in midlife and an increased risk of dementia in old age. The research cannot offer evidence of a causal link but with a 25-year follow-up period it is one of the longest studies to detect this association.

Chronic sinus inflammation linked to altered brain activity

More than one in 10 adults in the United States suffer from chronic rhinosinusitis, a persistent inflammatory sinus condition. A new brain imaging study is suggesting chronic rhinosinusitis is associated with functional brain connectivity changes that … Continue reading Chronic sinus inflammation linked to altered brain activity

More evidence an afternoon nap can be good for your brain

New research suggests regular afternoon naps (longer than five minutes but shorted than two hours) can be linked with better cognitive health in the elderly

A new observational study is building on an increasing body of data finding a correlation between afternoon naps and improved mental agility and cognitive function. The research hypothesizes afternoon naps may help moderate age-related neuroinflammation, helping keep the brain healthy.

Poor sleep may predict Alzheimer’s onset years before symptoms appear

Research suggests fragmented sleep and low-levels of slow-wave sleep can predict the rate by which toxic Alzheimer's-causing proteins accumulate in one's brain

A robust new study from researchers at UC Berkeley has found a consistent association between poor sleep and greater accumulation of the toxic proteins thought to be the pathological cause of Alzheimer’s disease. The researchers suggest fragmented sleep could be an effective early way to predict those most at risk of developing the neurodegenerative disease.
