Akamai + Fingerbank: How an open source community can transform security

Isn’t it amazing how seemingly simple decisions can have far-reaching effects? When the Inverse team in Montreal took over PacketFence in 2008, it was an open source (OS) solution. They recognized the inherent value in keeping it as such. In so doing, they didn’t just launch a product–they created a global community. By making a trusted network access control (NAC) solution freely available, they planted the seeds of an ever-growing community of users that now numbers more than 5,000 deployments worldwide and more than 7 million endpoints. Toward Inclusive Language in Software

Akamai opposes racism in all its forms and is committed to providing an inclusive, fair, and respectful environment for both our customers and our employees. As part of this commitment, we are joining other technology-industry leaders in removing biased, oppressive, and racially insensitive terminology across our portfolio. Such terminology includes blacklist/whitelist and master/slave, but will extend beyond those terms as we work with our teams and our partners to review other areas in which unconscious bias has allowed problematic terms to become unnecessarily commonplace. We recognize that these terms were generally introduced and used without bad intentions, but their presence and continued use are counterproductive to Akamai’s focus on equality and dedication to ensuring an inclusive culture. Internally, Akamai is establishing new standards to replace these terms in documentation, application UIs, APIs, and elsewhere. Although overdue, this process will take time, especially when APIs need to be versioned or deprecated. Continue reading Toward Inclusive Language in Software

5G, Security, IoT, Asavie and Akamai

Malicious actors never seem to rest and have always worked remotely. That simple realization hit home during recent global events. Specifically, Akamai saw an increase in malware traffic of over 400% between March 9, 2020 and May 11, 2020 from corporate devices, most of which were being used outside of a traditional office environment. The remote work and BYOD growth in enterprises continues unabated. Effectively, every business is experiencing BYOD security issues. With so many devices and ample opportunity for infection, mass inoculation of devices is critical. Continue reading 5G, Security, IoT, Asavie and Akamai
