Stopping immune system ‘talk’ may provide treatment for severe asthma

People with severe asthma may not respond to the usual treatment. Researchers have examined what drives the inflammatory response in severe asthmatics at a molecular level and their findings may lead to the development of an effective treatment for the… Continue reading Stopping immune system ‘talk’ may provide treatment for severe asthma

Microparticle therapy reverses MS in 100% of mice, cures one third

A new study using microparticle therapy to boost the number of ‘good’ immune cells has reversed the nerve cell damage in mice with multiple sclerosis-like symptoms and cured more than a third. The finding has the potential to lead to new treatments for… Continue reading Microparticle therapy reverses MS in 100% of mice, cures one third

Depression linked to brain’s subdued immune cells, not inflammation

A new study into the biological mechanisms underlying depression may have upended the widely held belief that the condition is associated with inflammation. It found that suppression of the brain’s immune cells might be a contributing factor instead.Co… Continue reading Depression linked to brain’s subdued immune cells, not inflammation

Subset of brain immune cells identified, linked to cognition and memory

Researchers have identified a subset of microglia, the brain's immune cells, called ARG1+ microglia (shown here in yellow), surrounded by regular microglia (red)

A new study has discovered the important role that a subset of microglia, the brain’s immune cells, plays in early brain development, cognition and memory. The finding gives us a better understanding of how these cells work and could pave the way for new treatments for neurodegenerative conditions like Alzheimer’s disease.

Molecular discovery may mean new treatments for rheumatoid arthritis

Injecting antibodies from a healthy person into someone suffering from rheumatoid arthritis can reduce inflammation and slow bone degeneration, but how this occurs has remained largely unknown until now. Researchers have uncovered the molecular pathway… Continue reading Molecular discovery may mean new treatments for rheumatoid arthritis

Giving exhausted T cells a second wind boosts cancer treatment

Constantly fighting cancer or other diseases can exhaust our immune system’s T cells, impeding their ability to kill invaders. A new study has identified a way of reviving exhausted T cells so they’re ready to fight again, improving the effectiveness o… Continue reading Giving exhausted T cells a second wind boosts cancer treatment

Dual-action hydrogel prevents brain cancer returning in 100% of test mice

Scientists at Johns Hopkins University have developed a treatment that could provide new hope for aggressive brain cancers. Injecting a drug-laden hydrogel into the brain after tumors have been surgically removed was found to launch a combined chemo- a… Continue reading Dual-action hydrogel prevents brain cancer returning in 100% of test mice

Groundbreaking trial of fecal transplant treatment for cancer patients

Australia is poised to undertake its first clinical trial using fecal transplantation to treat blood cancer patients who’ve developed serious complications following bone marrow transplantation.Continue ReadingCategory: Medical, ScienceTags: Cancer, fe… Continue reading Groundbreaking trial of fecal transplant treatment for cancer patients

Synthetic protein tweak could lead to universal cancer immunotherapy

Scientists at ETH Zurich have made a breakthrough towards designing an off-the-shelf treatment for immunotherapy against cancer. A synthetic protein tweak can allow immune cells from any donor to be given to any patient without the risk of a dangerous … Continue reading Synthetic protein tweak could lead to universal cancer immunotherapy

New study challenges decades-long understanding of our immune system

Researchers have discovered new information about how the body’s immune system works, simultaneously calling into question decades of understanding about the process of antibody-mediated immunity and opening the door for advancements in immunological t… Continue reading New study challenges decades-long understanding of our immune system
