Rheumatoid arthritis protein discovery points to potential new therapy

A team of researchers in the United States has discovered a novel mechanism in which a key protein drives the inflammatory damage associated with rheumatoid arthritis. The foundational finding is hoped to direct research toward entirely new pathways to… Continue reading Rheumatoid arthritis protein discovery points to potential new therapy

New rheumatoid arthritis drug passes Phase 3 trial, looks to approval

Research published in The New England Journal of Medicine has reported positive Phase 3 trial results for a new monoclonal antibody treatment targeting rheumatoid arthritis. The novel therapy is hoped to offer a new option for patients struggling with … Continue reading New rheumatoid arthritis drug passes Phase 3 trial, looks to approval

Cross-talking neurons spill secrets of inflammation spread in arthritis

As the underlying cause of rheumatoid arthritis and other autoimmune disorders, there is considerable interest in deepening our understanding of chronic inflammation and the way it takes hold in the human body. Shedding new light on this is a new study… Continue reading Cross-talking neurons spill secrets of inflammation spread in arthritis

Enzyme “sugar tag” blocks excess cell death behind chronic inflammation

Uncontrolled inflammation in the human body can drive a variety of serious health conditions, including cancer and rheumatoid arthritis, so discoveries around how it works can benefit the field of medicine in wide-ranging ways. A new example of this il… Continue reading Enzyme “sugar tag” blocks excess cell death behind chronic inflammation

Alpaca nanobodies target and dissolve root cause of chronic inflammation

Alpaca immune systems have some properties that may be very useful to medical science

By tapping into the unique immune system of alpacas, scientists have developed a promising technique for tempering chronic inflammation associated with conditions such as arthritis. The breakthrough hinges on what are known as nanobodies, which when taken from the woolly mammals were shown to neutralize the alarm system for the immune system and, in doing so, treat excessive inflammation in unhealthy mice.

Rheumatoid arthritis linked with gut bacteria imbalance

Impressive new research led by a team from University College London is suggesting bacterial imbalances in the gut microbiome may play a major role in the development of rheumatoid arthritis. The preclinical study found damage to the gut lining directl… Continue reading Rheumatoid arthritis linked with gut bacteria imbalance

Rheumatoid arthritis implants release drugs when they sense inflammation

Researchers at Washington University School of Medicine have tested an experimental new treatment for rheumatoid arthritis in mice. The team implanted stem cells that have been reprogrammed to secrete anti-inflammatory drugs only when they sense inflam… Continue reading Rheumatoid arthritis implants release drugs when they sense inflammation

“Micromotors” could more effectively treat rheumatoid arthritis

Although the drinking of hydrogen-gas-infused water can help treat rheumatoid arthritis, the effects are limited. Scientists have developed what could be a better alternative, though, in the form of tiny injectable gas-emitting “micromotors.”Continue R… Continue reading “Micromotors” could more effectively treat rheumatoid arthritis

Smart cartilage drip feeds arthritis drugs into joints under stress

Although anti-inflammatory drugs can be used to tackle conditions like osteoarthritis, there are downsides to our current methods of delivery, including the need for regular injections or the fact that these medications affect the entire body. New rese… Continue reading Smart cartilage drip feeds arthritis drugs into joints under stress

Arthritis drug reinforces our last line of defense against superbugs

A virus might be the boogeyman of 2020, but we shouldn’t ignore bacteria as a looming health threat. The growing problem of antibiotic resistance isn’t slowing down, which could soon render our best drugs useless against infection. Now, researchers at … Continue reading Arthritis drug reinforces our last line of defense against superbugs
