Human trial finds common food additive alters gut microbiome

A first-of-its-kind study investigating the effects of a common food additive on human gut bacteria has found the emulsifier carboxymethylcellulose can alter the quality and composition of the microbiome and potentially increase a person’s risk of chro… Continue reading Human trial finds common food additive alters gut microbiome

Exercise boosts production of anti-inflammatory cannabis-like substances

Research continues to shine a light on all the surprising ways that exercise can benefit the human body, and that includes altering the composition of our gut microbiome and tempering inflammation. A new study has explored this phenomenon in sufferers … Continue reading Exercise boosts production of anti-inflammatory cannabis-like substances

Synthetic molecule boosts bacteria-eating immune cells to treat pneumonia

Pneumonia is usually treated with antibiotics, but unfortunately these drugs are becoming less useful as bacteria develop resistance to them. Now, researchers at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) have found a way to boost immune cells to eat the … Continue reading Synthetic molecule boosts bacteria-eating immune cells to treat pneumonia

How tiny electrical implants could treat rheumatoid arthritis

Could the future of rheumatoid arthritis treatment be a small implant designed to deliver bursts of electrical stimulation to a key nerve that can regulate the body’s inflammatory reflex? A flurry of research around the world is investigating this comp… Continue reading How tiny electrical implants could treat rheumatoid arthritis

Traditional Samoan plant rivals anti-inflammatory effects of ibuprofen

Researchers have identified the anti-inflammatory mechanism behind a plant used for centuries in traditional Samoan medicine. The new study found the plant, known as matalafi, is as effective at reducing inflammation as ibuprofen.Continue ReadingCatego… Continue reading Traditional Samoan plant rivals anti-inflammatory effects of ibuprofen

Asthma study hints at benefits of soy for tackling airway inflammation

Scientists in Japan investigating new treatments for asthma have made a promising discovery, finding a fermented soybean product can help temper inflammation associated with the condition in animal models. The food supplement appeared to induce these a… Continue reading Asthma study hints at benefits of soy for tackling airway inflammation

Gut bacteria found to produce molecules that suppress inflammation

New research from an international team of scientists has uncovered a communication pathway illustrating how the microbiome can influence immune system activity in the gut. The new study describes how molecules produced by gut bacteria help control the… Continue reading Gut bacteria found to produce molecules that suppress inflammation

Missing link between severe COVID-19 and Alzheimer’s disease discovered

The gene variant plays a role in heightened inflammatory responses influencing both Alzheimer's disease and severe COVID-19

Early in the pandemic researchers saw disproportionately high rates of dementia patients suffering from severe COVID-19. A common hypothesis was that memory impairments associated with neurodegeneration affect a person’s ability to consistently follow infection control measures such as social distancing and mask wearing. But a new study led by scientists from University College London is proposing a key gene variant, known to heighten one’s risk for Alzheimer’s, stimulates the body’s inflammatory responses and can lead to greater susceptibility to severe COVID-19.
