New long COVID studies warn we’re still in “uncharted territory”

With successful vaccines helping prevent hospitalizations and deaths from COVID-19 scientists are racing to understand the long-term effects of this novel disease. Dubbed “long COVID”, a handful of new studies are beginning to shed light on this unusua… Continue reading New long COVID studies warn we’re still in “uncharted territory”

Metal, microbubbles and ultrasound combine to fight Alzheimer’s plaques

Brain imaging shows the accumulation of a metal-based molecule in the region of the brain targeted with ultrasound

Among the more interesting ways scientists hope to tackle the roots of Alzheimer’s disease is by using microbubbles to prise open the blood brain barrier and sneak in drugs that bust apart toxic plaques. A team in the UK has found new success using this experimental approach, demonstrating how the technique can be combined with ultrasound and a novel metal-based molecule to prevent this type of plaque buildup in its early stages.

“Mosquito smoothies” streamline production of promising malaria vaccine

The pursuit of a vaccine for malaria has always been an important one, with more than 400,000 people dying from the disease every year. But with the parasite behind it becoming resistant to drugs and the mosquitoes that spread it becoming more resistan… Continue reading “Mosquito smoothies” streamline production of promising malaria vaccine

Glowing probe lights up the signs of cardiovascular trouble

The accumulation of plaque inside the arteries can be an insidious condition with grave consequences that include blood clots and strokes, but luckily it does give off some tell-tale signs. Researchers in the UK have developed a new type of glowing pro… Continue reading Glowing probe lights up the signs of cardiovascular trouble

Last-resort antibiotic found to pop superbugs like balloons

By turning modern scientific tools on an antibiotic discovered 70 years ago, researchers have unearthed a previously unknown mechanism it uses to pierce and pop superbugs like balloons. Promisingly, the scientists have also demonstrated how this approa… Continue reading Last-resort antibiotic found to pop superbugs like balloons

High blood pressure suggested as link between diabetes and dementia

New research has found diabetics who go on to develop dementia display higher blood pressure for years before cognitive decline appears, compared to diabetics who don't develop dementia

Researchers have long detected higher rates of dementia in people with type 2 diabetes. New findings from Imperial College London are offering clues to why that may be the case, indicating that cardiometabolic factors associated with diabetes, such as increased blood pressure, could be contributing to the development of dementia.
