Diabetes and cancer death risk predicted by blood protein biomarker

A new study has found people with elevated blood levels of a protein called prostasin face a significantly higher risk of developing diabetes or dying from cancer. It’s unclear at this point whether the protein plays a causal role in either disease, ho… Continue reading Diabetes and cancer death risk predicted by blood protein biomarker

Protein discovery points to entirely new way to treat type 2 diabetes

A study led by researchers from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai has homed in on a newly discovered molecular mechanism that could prevent insulin resistance in type 2 diabetics. The research indicates disrupting the expression of a certain … Continue reading Protein discovery points to entirely new way to treat type 2 diabetes

Diabetes breakthrough restores insulin production using existing drug

Australian scientists have demonstrated a new way to restore insulin production in pancreatic cells, using a drug that’s already approved for use in humans. The study could mark a major breakthrough towards new treatments for diabetes.Continue ReadingC… Continue reading Diabetes breakthrough restores insulin production using existing drug

Big study reveals increased heart disease & diabetes risk after COVID-19

Risks for new diabetes diagnoses and cardiovascular problems were elevated for up to three months following an acute COVID-19 infection

There is both good and bad news in the findings from a massive new UK study tracking half a million subjects for up to a year following COVID-19. The study found COVID patients were at significantly greater risk of cardiovascular problems and new diabetes diagnoses for many weeks after an infection, however, that risk did return to baseline after several months.

Sight of mouthwatering meals triggers inflammation linked to diabetes

The sight of a mouthwatering dish can certainly be enough to send our senses into overdrive, and a new study has demonstrated how the mechanisms behind this may play an important role in type 2 diabetes. Scientists have shown for the first time how the… Continue reading Sight of mouthwatering meals triggers inflammation linked to diabetes

1 in 500 men may carry extra chromosome, raising risk of some diseases

A comprehensive genetic analysis of over 200,000 men has found that around one in 500 have an extra sex chromosome, with most of them unaware. That’s a much higher proportion than previously thought, and it seems to increase their risk of diseases like… Continue reading 1 in 500 men may carry extra chromosome, raising risk of some diseases

New potential diabetes treatment regenerates insulin-producing cells

An emerging way to treat diabetes is to repair or replace the cells in the body that naturally produce insulin. Swedish researchers have now identified a molecule that helps stimulate the growth of new insulin-producing cells, and uncovered how it work… Continue reading New potential diabetes treatment regenerates insulin-producing cells

Microgel beads offer safer path for cell transplants to treat diabetes

One of the ways scientists hope to lighten the burden of living with type 1 diabetes is through transplantations of cells that produce insulin, shoring up supplies of the vital hormone and safely regulating blood-sugar levels into the future. Rejection… Continue reading Microgel beads offer safer path for cell transplants to treat diabetes
