AI Security Threats: The Real Risk Behind Science Fiction Scenarios

We often hear about the positive aspects of artificial intelligence (AI) security — the way it can predict what customers need through data and deliver a custom result. When the darker side of AI is discussed, the conversation often centers on data privacy. Other conversations in this area veer into science fiction where the AI works […]

Data Privacy: How the Growing Field of Regulations Impacts Businesses

The proposed rules over artificial intelligence (AI) in the European Union (EU) are a harbinger of things to come. Data privacy laws are becoming more complex and growing in number and relevance. So, businesses that seek to become — and stay — compliant must find a solution that can do more than just respond to […]

Private LTE or 5G: Which Is More Secure?

Employees using mobile devices for work is nothing new. From health care workers using them for patient care to a salesperson checking work email in an airport, most of us have our phones on us at all times. However, the increase in the number of remote workers due to the COVID-19 pandemic has ramped up […]

US commission urges AI development amid global security concerns

American technology companies racing to develop and adopt artificial intelligence technology should do so responsibly and safely, according to a longtime security expert who has spent years studying the issue.  In a conversation on Thursday during A.I. Week, an event produced by Scoop News Group, Yll Bajraktari, the executive director of the National Security Commission on Artificial Intelligence, urged U.S. citizens to think carefully about the ethical use of powerful new technologies. The advice comes after Bajraktari’s commission published a report advising the U.S. government on issues to consider around the use of A.I.  The commission was established in 2018 to examine America’s ability to defend against malicious automation, and understand how the U.S. might best move forward in understanding such technology. In a report published March of this year, the group warned that the U.S. is not sufficiently prepared to compete with China on the issue.  “The United States […]

JP Morgan artificial intelligence researcher says AI goal is to ‘eradicate financial crime’

J.P. Morgan envisions a chief role for artificial intelligence in putting an end to financial crimes, the company’s head of AI research said Monday. Financial crimes that institutions like J.P. Morgan might have to reckon with include money laundering, sanctions violations, fraud and outright cyber theft. Across all industries and organizations, financial crime cost companies and organizations $1.45 trillion in 2019, according to one estimate, with cybercrime and fraud reportedly the most common varieties. “There is this concept of values” for AI, said Manuela Veloso, who besides her work for J.P. Morgan has worked as a professor in Carnegie Mellon University’s school of computer science. “First, we want AI to be able to eradicate financial crime.” Veloso’s comments came Monday during AI Week, an event produced by Scoop News Group. Along with direct money heists, cybercriminals run afoul of the law in other ways that can be categorized as financial […]

Artificial intelligence could accelerate breach notification time, expert says

Faster data breach notification time is emerging as a reliable application of artificial intelligence in the cybersecurity sector, a development that could help other industries better understand their own use of smarter technologies, a leading subject matter expert said on Monday.  Dr. Frederic Lemieux, faculty director and professor of the practice for applied intelligence at Georgetown University, suggested that more efficient pattern recognition already is helping global companies spot anomalies in wide swaths of data. Unusual behaviors — such as an employee logging on to sensitive networks at odd hours, or an email attachment including nefarious data — are more likely to raise a red flag, pointing human analysts to possible security issues.  “It’s simple,” Lemieux said during A.I. Week, an event produced by Scoop News Group. “The costs of cybersecurity are prohibitive and companies are facing situations where the average cost of a data breach in the United States […]

How AI in Cybersecurity Addresses Challenges Faced by Today’s SOC Analysts

Today’s security operations centers (SOC) have to manage data, tools and teams dispersed across the organization, making threat detection and teamwork difficult. There are many factors driving complex security work. Many people now work from home with coworkers in far-away places. The cost and maintenance of legacy tools and the migration to cloud also make […]
