Obesity breakthrough safely mimics weight-loss effects of plant compound

Although it has long been used in traditional Chinese medicine to treat conditions including rheumatoid arthritis and psoriasis, regulatory bodies have warned against the use of celastrol due to the potential for nasty side effects. But the compound ha… Continue reading Obesity breakthrough safely mimics weight-loss effects of plant compound

Purifying hydrogel tablet makes river water drinkable within an hour

Access to clean water is a major unmet need in many parts of the world. Researchers at the University of Texas at Austin have developed a new hydrogel tablet that could help, with a prototype able to disinfect a liter of river water in one hour.Continu… Continue reading Purifying hydrogel tablet makes river water drinkable within an hour

Fat cell distress signal could help unlock the “obesity paradox”

Obesity is associated with a whole range of health problems, but in some specific cases, it appears to be protective in the short term against cardiovascular disease. This “obesity paradox” remains mysterious, but now researchers may have uncovered one… Continue reading Fat cell distress signal could help unlock the “obesity paradox”

Statin use linked with increased survival from aggressive breast cancer

A new study is offering the most detailed investigation to date into the relationship between breast cancer survival and statins – common cholesterol-lowering drugs. The retrospective study saw a 58 percent greater survival rate in breast cancer patien… Continue reading Statin use linked with increased survival from aggressive breast cancer

First brain observations of faulty memory sheds light on Alzheimer’s

Scientists have used experiments on rats to identify specific patterns of brain cell activity that can relate to correct and incorrect memories

Through a new study on rodents, scientists have made first-of-a-kind observations of the brain mistakenly recalling a memory. The researchers were able to identify patterns of brain cell activation as mistakes were made during memory experiments, which the scientists believe lays the groundwork for understanding the mechanisms at play in memory disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease.

Cancer immunotherapy adapted to fight dangerous fungal infections

Infections of Cryptococcus fungi are potentially fatal, because the immune system has a hard time fighting off the invaders. But in a new study, researchers have given it a helping hand, by adapting a cancer immunotherapy technique called CAR T cell th… Continue reading Cancer immunotherapy adapted to fight dangerous fungal infections

Cell conversion method cures diabetes in mouse models

In a healthy pancreas, the hormones insulin and glucagon work in tandem to keep blood sugar levels in check, but sometimes this relationship can break down and lead to what we know as diabetes. Scientists at the University of Texas (UT) Southwestern ha… Continue reading Cell conversion method cures diabetes in mouse models

Iridium levels of submerged crater support dinosaur extinction theory

A new study has analyzed asteroid dust recently discovered in the Chicxulub asteroid crater. The findings further support the theory that the dramatic impact was the cause of the mass extinction event that wiped out the dinosaurs.Continue ReadingCatego… Continue reading Iridium levels of submerged crater support dinosaur extinction theory

Tiny, high-capacity “atomristor” stores data in single-atom switches

Engineers at the University of Texas have created one of the smallest memory storage devices ever, made out of a two-dimensional material measuring one nanometer square. Dubbed an “atomristor,” the device works on the movements of single atoms, which c… Continue reading Tiny, high-capacity “atomristor” stores data in single-atom switches
