Beer yeast genetically engineered to detect and treat gut inflammation

Researchers from Brigham and Women’s Hospital have engineered yeast used in baking, wine-making and brewing to treat inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The bacteria has been modified to secrete an anti-inflammatory molecule in response to signs of gut i… Continue reading Beer yeast genetically engineered to detect and treat gut inflammation

Why COVID-19 vaccines can provide stronger immunity than natural infection

Eighteen months after the first officially reported SARS-CoV-2 cases appeared in Wuhan we can now begin to investigate questions that were impossible to answer early on in the pandemic, such as what kind of immunity is generated from a natural infectio… Continue reading Why COVID-19 vaccines can provide stronger immunity than natural infection

Stanford study finds inflammation in brains of deceased COVID-19 patients

New research led by the Stanford School of Medicine is offering a detailed investigation into brain tissue from those who died from COVID-19. Although no trace of the SARS-CoV-2 virus could be detected, “profound molecular markers of inflammation” were… Continue reading Stanford study finds inflammation in brains of deceased COVID-19 patients

Yale study shows COVID-19 infection can be hampered by the common cold

A compelling new study has demonstrated how acute exposure to the common cold can slow the onset of a SARS-CoV-2 infection by stimulating the immune system to jump into action early. The research shows in impressive detail how the immune system can be … Continue reading Yale study shows COVID-19 infection can be hampered by the common cold

Severe COVID-19 in men linked to low testosterone levels

A new study tracking testosterone levels in hospitalized COVID-19 patients has found a link between low levels of the hormone in men and severe disease outcomes. The research offers important clues as to why men seem to be at greater risk of death from… Continue reading Severe COVID-19 in men linked to low testosterone levels

Cancer vaccine and immunotherapy team up against tumors

New clues to link between depression and inflammation

An inflammatory biomarker was found in higher levels in depressed subjects compared to non-depressed subjects

Research from King’s College London has found new evidence of a link between low-grade systemic inflammation and depression. The large-scale case-control study identified higher levels of an inflammatory biomarker in depressed subjects compared to non-depressed subjects, however, not all experts are convinced inflammation plays a causal role in depression.
