T-Mobile: Breach exposed call information for some customers

T-Mobile says that it “recently identified and quickly shut down” a data breach that included call-related information about some accounts. The wireless telecommunication firm said in a notice mailed to some customers in late December that the incident “may have included phone number, number of lines subscribed to on your account and, in some cases, call-related information collected as part of the normal operation of your wireless service.” It’s the fourth data breach that the company has acknowledged within the last three years. T-Mobile, which completed a merger with Sprint in April 2020, also disclosed incidents that occurred in March 2020, November 2019 and August 2018. The company called the intrusion “malicious, unauthorized access,” but did not release details about the suspected intruders or their methods. Personally identifiable information was not affected in this latest breach, T-Mobile said. “The data accessed did not include names on the account, physical or […]

UK bill proposes stiff fines for companies that violate Huawei ban

The U.K. government is proposing big penalties for companies that fail to comply with telecommunications security requirements aimed at keeping technology from Huawei out of the country’s new high-speed networks. Legislation proposed Tuesday by Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s government would levy fines of as much as 100,000 pounds ($134,000) per day if companies don’t meet deadlines for new security requirements. The bill essentially would codify a decision by Johnson this summer to ban Huawei from the U.K.’s 5G and fiber optics networks because of security concerns. The U.S. had pressured Britain to block Huawei over its alleged ties to the Chinese state. The Trump administration has continued to expand restrictions on the company as the U.S. and China continue to battle over trade rules, internet policy and other tech issues. Huawei has denied it spies on customers at the behest of the Chinese government. The legislation clarifies what is expected […]

‘MuddyWater’ spies suspected in attacks against Middle East governments, telecoms

One of the most prolific cyber-espionage groups linked to Iran has used old tricks — and perhaps a new hacking tool — in dozens of attempts to breach government and telecommunications operators in the Middle East in recent months, security researchers said Wednesday. The hacking attempts have hit organizations in Iraq, Kuwait, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates, according to researchers at security provider Symantec. Iran has strategic interests in all of those countries. And the attackers appear to be trying to smuggle key data from the organizations they managed to breach. It’s a reminder that while other hacking teams associated with Tehran have gained notoriety for disruptive, data-wiping attacks against Middle East organizations, the group known as MuddyWater, or Seedworm, has been relentless in its spying efforts. “These actors are extremely focused in what they’re doing,” said Vikram Thakur, technical director at Symantec, a division of semiconductor and software maker Broadcom. “They’re not […]
