Mirai IoT botnet variant likely used in January DDoS attack against Dutch banks

A series of denial-of-service attacks against banks and government agencies in the Netherlands was carried out by an attacker using a Mirai botnet variant, according to new research from the cybersecurity firm Recorded Future. The late January attacks temporarily brought down the networks of the Netherlands national tax office as well online banking services for ABN Amro, ING and Rabobank. The attackers themselves have been subject to much speculation but remain unknown at this time. Researchers said the malware used in the attacks may be linked to IoTroop, code that infects Internet of Things (IoT) devices like routers, televisions and cameras in order to send a tsunami of data at a target until the network buckles under the weight. IoTroop also shares a lot of source code with the infamous Mirai malware. “This is the first time we have observed an IoT botnet being used since Mirai and it may be the first time IoTroop has been used to […]

Atos makes $5 billion bid for Gemalto

Atos, a French technology consulting firm, to buy the Dutch tech firm Gemalto for €4.3 billion ($5.06 billion) on Monday. The acquisition offer was made two weeks ago at a premium of 42 percent on Gemalto’s stock price. Combining Atos and Gemalto will create a cyber and national security business with total annual revenue of €1.5 billion, Breton said in a statement on Monday. That line of business in particular would be a major player in both the European and American markets. Gemalto’s cybersecurity business is a driving force behind the offer, according to Thierry Breton, Chairman and CEO of Atos. Gemalto is one of the world’s biggest microchip manufacturers, but profits have been lower than expected for the last year. The company is the world’s largest manufacturer of SIM cards and credit card chips. Gemalto’s businesses in data encryption, identity and access management and crypto management are meant to complement Atos’s artificial intelligence, big data, high performance computers and cloud […]

Western allies consider offensive cyber warfare agreement as Russia launches plan for ‘independent internet’

Several Western nations are considering an offensive-minded cyberwarfare initiative meant to fundamentally change the way the countries react to attacks from adversary nations, Reuters reports. The accord would guide the deployment of offensive cyberweapons. The agreement, being hammered out by the Denmark, Germany, Norway, Spain, The Netherlands, United Kingdom and United States, may be solidified by 2019. While all the nations involved are members of NATO, a NATO spokesperson speaking to CyberScoop was careful to point out that this is definitively not a NATO-backed initiative. NATO itself recently announced it will establish new command centers to incorporate the cyber domain into operational planning. The alliance has seen an increasing number of attacks against members and institutions and NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg recently said cyber-operations are a potential response any kind of attack against member countries. Irina Novakova, a NATO official, detailed for CyberScoop the alliance’s increasing focus on cyberattacks including the decision that a severe cyberattack could […]
