Irish Prime Minister says government won’t pay ransom after hack forces hospitals to alter services

Ireland’s public health care system on Friday shut down its IT systems in response to what it called a “criminal ransomware attack.” Emergency departments have continued to operate normally, but health officials said in a statement Monday that they were working to get computer systems supporting maternity, infant care and radiology back online. The ransomware intrusion at Ireland’s Health Service Executive (HSE), the $25 billion public health system, has forced hospitals in various parts of Ireland to alter their services. In some cases, hospital staffers say they have been in touch with pregnant women and encouraged them to not come to the hospital unless they are near their due date. Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin has said the government will not pay a ransom. ‘We’re very clear we will not be paying any ransom or engaging in any of that sort of stuff’ Taoiseach @MichealMartinTD says of the ransomware attack […]

Intrusion Truth details work of suspected Chinese hackers who are under indictment in US

Intrusion Truth, a mysterious group known for exposing suspected Chinese cyber-espionage operations, on Thursday published a new investigation that traced front companies allegedly used by two Chinese men whom a U.S. grand jury indicted last year. The findings shed light on a dynamic that U.S. law enforcement officials say is increasingly common: foreign intelligence services’ use of front companies to try to conceal their hacking operations. The details also come at a time when Biden administration officials are dealing with the fallout of another suspected Chinese hacking campaign in which attackers leveraged widely used Microsoft software. The Justice Department has alleged that the two suspects, Li Xiaoyu and Dong Jiazhi, met at university before embarking on a decade of malicious cyber activity, sometimes for personal financial gain and other times on behalf of the Ministry of State Security, China’s civilian intelligence agency. In some cases, the men allegedly probed the […]

Hackers disrupt networks at San Diego medical provider, Kansas organ transplant facilitator

A pair of hacks at health care organizations revealed in recent days highlights the enduring cybercriminal threat to the sector as the U.S. makes progress in fighting the coronavirus pandemic. Scripps Health, a San Diego-based nonprofit system with five hospital campuses, on May 1 said that it had suspended access to IT applications that support its health care facilities following a “security incident.” The incident forced Scripps to reschedule some patient appointments for Saturday and Monday, but “patient care continues to be delivered safely and effectively at our facilities,” the nonprofit said in a statement on its Facebook page. (Scripps’ website was still down by press time on Tuesday morning.) Meanwhile, Midwest Transplant Network, a Kansas-based organization that connects organ donors with recipients, said it had been working to determine if patients’ personal health data had been affected by a recent breach. NPR affiliate KCUR reported that some 17,000 people […]
