Tamper-proof glueprints distinguish real from fake at over 99% accuracy

ID verification tags aren’t much use if someone can just peel them off and stick them to a fake product. MIT scientists have now designed ID tags that use the glue itself as a kind of fingerprint, and will scramble the barcode if someone peels it off.C… Continue reading Tamper-proof glueprints distinguish real from fake at over 99% accuracy

Water-based circuit concept switches much faster than semiconductors

Water is usually something you’d want to keep away from electronic circuits, but engineers in Germany have now developed a new concept for water-based switches that are much faster than current semiconductor materials.Continue ReadingCategory: Electron… Continue reading Water-based circuit concept switches much faster than semiconductors

New camera system taps into terahertz wavelengths for better imaging

A team of engineers has developed a new type of camera that can detect radiation in terahertz (THz) wavelengths. This new imaging system can see through certain materials in high detail, which could make it useful for security scanners and other sensor… Continue reading New camera system taps into terahertz wavelengths for better imaging

Graphene used to create “world’s thinnest Christmas tree”

A couple of years ago, Canadian scientists celebrated the Christmas season by creating a microscopic gingerbread house. In that same spirit, Danish researchers have now produced what they claim is the world’s thinnest Christmas tree – and it’s made of … Continue reading Graphene used to create “world’s thinnest Christmas tree”

A Terahertz Modulator

We’re all used to the changes in the properties of radio frequency systems as the frequency increases and the wavelength becomes shorter. The difference between the way an FM radio and a WiFi adapter behave with respect to their environments, for instance. But these are relatively low frequencies in the scheme of electromagnetic radiation, as you will be aware with ever shorter wavelengths those properties change further until eventually we are not dealing with something we’d describe as radio, but infrared light.

Terahertz waves are the electromagnetic radiation that lies in that area between radio frequencies and infra-red light. You …read more
