Shape-changing “robotic fabric” switches between soft and strong

A team of scientists at Yale University has developed a new “robotic fabric” that can change its shape and stiffness on demand or by sensing its environment. The material could one day be used in high-tech clothing, tents that set themselves up, or rob… Continue reading Shape-changing “robotic fabric” switches between soft and strong

VR-controlled robot shelf-stacker starts shift in Japanese stores

Robots are an increasingly common sight in stores, helping customers carry their shopping, keeping track of stock and mapping the layout. Now they’re getting a bit more hands-on thanks to Japanese company Telexistence, which has begun trials in conveni… Continue reading VR-controlled robot shelf-stacker starts shift in Japanese stores

Microscopic robot would use laser pulses to walk through the body

One day microscopic robots could be crawling through your body, clearing out disease or delivering drugs. And now we’re one step closer to that future, as scientists from Cornell University have created tiny robots powered by pulses of laser light.Cont… Continue reading Microscopic robot would use laser pulses to walk through the body

Tiny, wireless camera streams beetle’s-eye view of the world

Researchers at the University of Washington have created a new camera system that’s so small and light it can perch on the back of a beetle. From there, it can be wirelessly controlled to focus on different things, and stream video and photos back to a… Continue reading Tiny, wireless camera streams beetle’s-eye view of the world

Autonomous robot scientist can choose its own experiments

Robots are learning to do the jobs of human factory workers, bus drivers, burger flippers, butlers, and healthcare workers, among many others – and now, they may be coming for scientists as well. Engineers at the University of Liverpool have developed … Continue reading Autonomous robot scientist can choose its own experiments

DIY robot arm construction kit makes pick-and-place competitive

Craft and construction kits have been a blessing in our recent lockdown phases, and now there’s a new one that might appeal to those interested in tinkering with robots. ArmPal is a robot arm kit that you build yourself, then pit against other robot ar… Continue reading DIY robot arm construction kit makes pick-and-place competitive

Interplanetary Whack-A-Mole: NASA’s High-Stakes Rescue Plan for InSight Lander’s Science Mission

People rightly marvel at modern surgical techniques that let surgeons leverage the power of robotics to repair the smallest structures in the human body through wounds that can be closed with a couple of stitches. Such techniques can even be applied remotely, linking surgeon and robot through a telesurgery link. …read more

Robots compete in DARPA's Subterranean Challenge to prep for alien life hunt

One of team CoSTAR's cave-exploring robots, which will be participating in the DARPA Subterranean Challenge this ...

This week DARPA kicks off a competition called the Subterranean Challenge, where hordes of robots are unleashed into caves and tunnels to test how well they can autonomously navigate these environments. One team, headed up by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab (JPL), is entering a crew of bots that could inform future designs of spacefaring robots that explore caves and lava tubes on other planets and moons.
