Large study finds asprin does not reduce risk of developing Alzheimer’s

A new study has found that daily consumption of aspirin offers no benefit when it comes to cognitive impairment associated with dementia and Alzheimer's

The idea that regular consumption of aspirin can reduce the symptoms of dementia has been the source of much contention in scientific circles. World-first ultrasound biosensor promises real-time tumor tracking

Ultrasound has become an indispensable tool for showing us internal structures of the human body, but could it come to offer a far more detailed and dynamic picture as the body responds to drugs or disease? Scientists in Australia have leveraged the te… Continue reading World-first ultrasound biosensor promises real-time tumor tracking

Hydrophilic disc uses solar power to separate salt from water

Current approaches to water desalination are tremendously expensive and energy-intensive, so the search is very much on for new technologies that can get the job done more efficiently. Scientists in Melbourne have put forward one rather promi… Continue reading Hydrophilic disc uses solar power to separate salt from water

Martian microbes may be snacking on space dust

Modern Mars is a desolate husk of a planet, as far as life is concerned. But it’s not completely uninhabitable, since microbes could be hiding in the cracks of rocks and dirt. And now a new study has found a possible food source for these org… Continue reading Martian microbes may be snacking on space dust

Manipulating gut microbes in livestock could cut their methane emissions

Fossil fuels cop the brunt of attention for reducing climate-changing emissions, but they’re far from the only culprit – livestock like sheep and cows are responsible for huge amounts of methane being released into the atmosphere. Now, an int… Continue reading Manipulating gut microbes in livestock could cut their methane emissions

Dusty, gassy origins of giant planets observed at last

An international team of physicists has finally found proof of circumplanetary disks, adding substantial weight to current theoretical models of planet formation. These disks of gas surrounded by dust have eluded detection, until now. ..
