Stars are big hot balls of plasma, but astronomers have now spotted a super strange one that seems to have a solid surface. Its intense magnetic field is strong enough to overcome its blistering temperatures and “freeze” its outer layers into a solid c… Continue reading Bizarre star may have a solid surface, according to X-ray observations
Ordinarily, pacemakers correct irregular heartbeats by delivering an electric shock to the entire heart – which can be painful. An experimental new one takes a different approach, and it does so by encompassing the heart with light-emitting “petals.”Co… Continue reading Flower-like pacemaker uses light for pain-free defibrillation
In order to grow big and strong, plants require the red and blue light that are part of the visible “white” light produced by the sun. Scientists have now developed a plant-boosting film, that converts the sun’s UV light into more red light.Continue Re… Continue reading Thin film boosts plant growth by converting sun’s UV rays into red light
The speed record for data transmission using a single light source and optical chip has been shattered once again. Engineers have transmitted data at a blistering rate of 1.84 petabits per second (Pbit/s), almost twice the global internet traffic per second.

Plastics can be hard, plastics can be soft, but can plastics be both at the same time? Scientists at the University of Texas at Austin have been exploring this question and produced a first-of-a-kind material that is pliable in some sections and stiff … Continue reading Light-activated “smart plastic” has its soft spots
Black holes have been seen to chow down on stars that wander too close, resulting in a bright stellar show. But now a black hole has been seen doing something nobody’s ever seen before – it “burped up” material several years after eating a star, leavin… Continue reading Astronomers can’t explain a black hole “burp” years after it ate a star
While it may not be way up there on your list of grievances, constantly having to reposition a desk lamp can be a bit of a hassle. The Pino Lamp was designed with that fact in mind, as it automatically swivels to follow faces, books, or items of a give… Continue reading Auto-tracking Pino Lamp pans with users’ faces or other targets
Besides keeping your food cold, there’s not much more we need from a fridge, but that doesn’t stop manufacturers from cramming new features in there in the endless pursuit of “innovation.” The latest example from LG is the MoodUP, a fridge that sports … Continue reading LG’s moody new fridge lights up in custom colors and plays music
