WiFi Power Bar!

Ever wanted to access a file or run some program on your computer while away from home, but the darned thing is turned off? Finding themselves occasionally working away from home and not wanting to leave their computer on for extended periods, [robotmaker]’s solution was to hack into existence a WiFi-controlled power bar!

Inside the junction box, an eight-channel relay is connected to an ESP8266 module. The module uses MQTT to communicate with Home Assistant and is powered by a partially dismembered USB AC adapter — wrapped in kapon tape for safe-keeping. The entire bar is wired through a 10A …read more

RSA and the Power of CommUNITY

After attending RSA Conference 2017 it was clear the theme – The Power of CommUNITY – was a thread throughout the conference. This was seen in several places: Dr. Zulfikar Ramzan, CTO of RSA, mentioned this topic several times in his keynote on Tuesday morning. He urged us as an industry to “draw connections” and…

What do RSA Conference 2017 and my DVR have in common?

Another year, another RSA Conference. At this point, I have lost count of my appearances at this annual gathering of all things security – I believe it was number 15 or 16 for me. I say “appearances” because the days blur into such a steady stream of meetings, discussions and general sensory overload that at…

Business-Driven Security™ to Lead through Chaos

My last post discussed the changing nature of security. The impact of today’s cyberattacks aren’t limited to stealing financial information or personal data. Instead, these attacks seed chaos. With this reality at hand, the need for business-driven security is even more pronounced. Security professionals must draw connections between the technical details of a security incident…

A View From the #RSAC SOC

First full day at RSA Conference 2017 started with an excellent keynote and the expected rush of mobile devices to the wireless network.  After a bit more than a day the Wi-Fi network is regularly pushing 500-700mpbs of traffic, which the RSA NetWitness® packet decoder is handling nicely.  The port scanning activity detected on the…
