Careful Cuts Lets Logger Last a Year On A Coin Cell

Coin cells are great for backup power for things like real-time clocks, or even for powering incredibly small mechanical devices like watches. But for something like a data logger, running …read more Continue reading Careful Cuts Lets Logger Last a Year On A Coin Cell

Quantum dots make for stabler, more efficient perovskite solar cells

Perovskite solar cells have come a long way in a short time, but there’s still room for improvement. Engineers have now added a layer of quantum dots to the recipe, resulting in a more stable solar cell with near-record efficiency.Continue ReadingCateg… Continue reading Quantum dots make for stabler, more efficient perovskite solar cells

Moving bed designed for faster, more cost-effective 3D printing

Quite often when objects are being 3D printed, they have to include supportive structures that are subsequently cut off and discarded. A new print bed, however, is designed to minimize or even eliminate the need for such structures, thus reducing both … Continue reading Moving bed designed for faster, more cost-effective 3D printing

MIT tech gets the most bang for the buck out of laser-cut materials

When you’re laser-cutting parts for a build project, you obviously want to be as efficient as possible. A new MIT-created program is designed to help, by optimizing the manner in which parts are cut from sheets of raw material.Continue ReadingCategory:… Continue reading MIT tech gets the most bang for the buck out of laser-cut materials

Maintaining an Energy-Efficient Edge Platform

Over the past 20 years, we’ve seen a lot of growth at Akamai. When I started at Akamai, we used to have traffic peaks of almost 200 Mbps. From that fledgling startup, Akamai has now grown to such a scale that we almost doubled network capacity in 2020 … Continue reading Maintaining an Energy-Efficient Edge Platform

Maintaining an Energy-Efficient Edge Platform

Over the past 20 years, we’ve seen a lot of growth at Akamai. When I started at Akamai, we used to have traffic peaks of almost 200 Mbps. From that fledgling startup, Akamai has now grown to such a scale that we almost doubled network capacity in 2020 and were able to serve peaks of almost 200 Tbps. In short, just like the internet, Akamai has undergone quite the evolution. But as we’ve grown, so have our environmental impacts. In fact, the internet as a whole is responsible for more than 2% of global emissions, having the same impact as the airline industry. Our online streaming, learning, working, shopping, and playing habits have all started to add up. Continue reading Maintaining an Energy-Efficient Edge Platform

Sprinkle of chili compound boosts perovskite solar cell efficiency

A touch of chili peppers can spice up just about any dish – and maybe, it turns out, even solar cells. Researchers have now found that adding a sprinkle of capsaicin to a perovskite precursor can improve the efficiency of solar cells.Continue ReadingCa… Continue reading Sprinkle of chili compound boosts perovskite solar cell efficiency

World’s most energy efficient vehicle rolls on to new heights

Electric vehicles have come a long way in the last decade or so, moving people from A to B with ever-improving efficiency, but none quite match the levels of a student-built railroad car called Eximus IV. The vehicle has taken to the tracks at the annu… Continue reading World’s most energy efficient vehicle rolls on to new heights
