Novel anti-obesity drug breaks the cycle of appetite and weight gain

A team of scientists in the US investigating the relationship between metabolic syndrome and a key hormone have demonstrated how a promising new drug could play an important preventative role in a variety of conditions. The experiments were carried out… Continue reading Novel anti-obesity drug breaks the cycle of appetite and weight gain

New research suggests diabetes drug could slow Alzheimer’s progression

The research found a link between slower cognitive decline and diabetic patients taking drugs called gliptins

A new study published in the journal Neurology is reporting an association between a particular class of drugs used to treat type 2 diabetes and decreased Alzheimer’s disease biomarkers. It is unclear exactly how these diabetes drugs could exert neuroprotective effects, but Alzheimer’s experts are calling for large-scale clinical trials to explore these potential treatments in non-diabetic groups.

Type 1 diabetes prevented in mice by immune-cell-regulating peptide

A peptide called MOTS-c has shown promise in preventing type 1 diabetes, according to new tests in human cells in culture and live mice. The peptide seems to regulate the immune system, potentially leading to treatments for type 1 diabetes and other au… Continue reading Type 1 diabetes prevented in mice by immune-cell-regulating peptide

Artificial pancreas trialed in patients with type 2 diabetes

An artificial pancreas has been trialed in patients with type 2 diabetes for the first time. The device monitors a person’s blood glucose levels and automatically administers insulin when needed – and the results so far are promising.Continue ReadingCa… Continue reading Artificial pancreas trialed in patients with type 2 diabetes

“Synthetic hinge” opens a door to smart, glucose-responsive insulin

For sufferers of diabetes, keeping blood glucose levels within a healthy range can be a difficult and labor-intensive balancing act that often requires regular insulin injections, but some scientists imagine a future where medicine does the heavy lifti… Continue reading “Synthetic hinge” opens a door to smart, glucose-responsive insulin

Restoring a baby’s gut bacteria could reduce future diabetes risk

New research has found a maternal fecal transplant may mitigate the damage antibiotics cause to the development of a newborn baby’s microbiome. The animal study focused specifically on a mouse model of type 1 diabetes, finding a fecal transplant greatl… Continue reading Restoring a baby’s gut bacteria could reduce future diabetes risk

Stem cells “reprogrammed” by diabetes could increase heart attack risk

Diabetes has a long list of run-on health effects, and one of them is an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Now, scientists at Oxford have uncovered a mechanism behind that, finding high blood sugar levels “reprogram” stem cells so the white blo… Continue reading Stem cells “reprogrammed” by diabetes could increase heart attack risk

AI tool can measure fat around the heart and calculate one’s diabetes risk

Accumulation of fat specifically around the heart has long been linked to cardiovascular and metabolic disease but until now there hasn’t been a simple way to measure this. A new artificial intelligence tool has been developed that can quantify these f… Continue reading AI tool can measure fat around the heart and calculate one’s diabetes risk

New clues point to the liver playing a causal role in type 2 diabetes

Researchers investigating new diabetes treatments believe they have found evidence indicating excess production of a key neurotransmitter in the liver could be a key causal factor in the onset of insulin resistance. The discovery points to novel preven… Continue reading New clues point to the liver playing a causal role in type 2 diabetes
