New report warns of connected-car security dangers

Securing the connected, smart and increasingly autonomous cars of tomorrow against hackers and criminals will only get harder as the computerized and constantly communicating ecosystem for connected vehicles expands to take in smart road infrastructure, smart homes and smart cities. That’s the warning in “Observations and Recommendations on Connected Vehicle Security,” a new paper from the Cloud Security Alliance, a tech-focused industry group that studies security issues and promulgates best practices. The authors were lead by Brian Russell, who is the chairman of CSA’s Internet of Things Working Group and the chief engineer for cybersecurity solutions at Leidos. They note that a connected vehicle’s attack surface only gets larger as automakers add more navigation, engine-control and entertainment systems inside the car, and society adds more smart devices and connected infrastructure outside of it. “Within a system-of-systems such as the CV ecosystem, there are many points of interconnectedness. We’re running out of time with IoT security — here are some ways to fix it

The world is reeling from the large-scale WannaCry ransomware attack. Over 350,000 machines in 150 countries were hit in a single weekend: the UK national health service, French car maker Renault, Portugal Telecom, FedEx, Deutsche Bahn rail, Russian rail, the National Bank of China, and many others were forced to cancel services as the attack froze computers across their sites, encrypted their data and demanded bitcoin as ransom. Wannacry is believed to be the biggest ransomware attack in history, but it’s only the beginning. Expect to see a lot more of this in the future. Expect to be one of the victims. After decades of buildup, the dawn of the smart city is within sight. The biggest connected-vehicle pilot programs in the world are ramping up right now across the United States. But experts still have grave concerns about the cybersecurity and ultimately the safety of this expanding technology. The timetable is imminent.  New York City, Wyoming and Tampa have been the sites of the federally approved Connected Vehicle Pilot Deployment Program since launch in 2015. Bidding on contracts to expand New York’s program — which set a goal of more than 8,000 connected vehicles and 350 roadside units to match the connected 12,400 traffic signals already deployed — is expected to be announced this month. Over the next two years, all three of the programs plan to be fully operating. The long-term goals are grandiose and the forecast is clear: Nearly everything on every road in America will one day be connected, tracked and to some extent […]
