No decisions yet on any changes to TikTok or Huawei cases, White House says

The Biden administration is still reviewing how it will approach any national security challenges posed by Chinese-owned video-sharing app TikTok and telecommunications provider Huawei, the White House said Monday. “We need a comprehensive strategy … and a more systematic approach that actually addresses the full range of these issues,” White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said of China-related technology and national security concerns that intensified during the Trump administration. That means “play[ing] a better defense” when it comes to preventing alleged Chinese theft of U.S. intellectual property, she said. President Joe Biden is “firmly committed to making sure that Chinese companies cannot misappropriate and misuse American data,” Psaki added. She was short on specifics, however, citing an “ongoing review” by the new administration of a range of China-related technology and national security issues. The press secretary did not address, for example, whether the Biden administration will continue an executive order […]

FCC officially names Huawei, ZTE as national security risks

The U.S. Federal Communications Commission has designated Chinese telecommunication providers Huawei and ZTE as national security risks, a decision that officially prohibits American phone companies from purchasing their equipment with government subsidies. The announcement Tuesday comes after U.S. intelligence agencies have repeatedly warned that Huawei and ZTE could conduct espionage against the U.S. and its allies on Beijing’s behalf. The FCC’s decision takes effect immediately. It prevents U.S. companies regulated by the agency from spending federal funds obtained through the $8.3 billion Universal Service Fund (USF) — which is designed to promote universal access to phone services — on equipment or services from Huawei or ZTE. The companies are subject to a Chinese law that requires firms to provide authorities with sensitive data, even if they’re unwilling to do so. FCC Chairman Ajit Pai said in a statement that both companies “have close ties to the Chinese Communist Party and China’s military apparatus,” […]

US Commerce Department tightens screws on Huawei export controls

The U.S. Department of Commerce on Friday said it was tightening regulations to prevent Huawei from using U.S. software to make semiconductors abroad, the latest move by officials to crack down on a Chinese telecommunications giant they deem a national security threat. The new regulations are an effort to “narrowly and strategically target Huawei’s acquisition of semiconductors that are the direct product of certain U.S. software and technology,” the Department of Commerce said in a statement. Huawei has been circumventing previous restrictions on using U.S. technology to make semiconductors, which are key to its smartphone business, Commerce officials alleged. The updated export controls go further in forcing foreign companies that use U.S. chipset technology to get a license before selling that technology to Huawei. A Huawei spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The new export controls are one of a series of stringent measures the Trump administration […]

Trump’s national security adviser warns Canadians against Huawei 5G tech

A top White House official warned Canadians this weekend against allowing China-based Huawei to help in building out Canada’s next generation 5G telecommunications networks. “The technology allows China to put together profiles of the most intimate details, intimate personal details, of every single man, woman and child in China,” President Donald Trump’s national security adviser, Robert O’Brien, said at the Halifax International Security Forum, according to CBC News. “When they get Huawei into Canada or other Western countries, they’re going to know every health record, every banking record, every social media post; they’re going to know everything about every single Canadian,” O’Brien said. Given that China has a law that would require Chinese companies to yield to Chinese intelligence agencies’ requests, the Trump administration and lawmakers are concerned that Beijing could use Huawei and other Chinese-based companies for spying. O’Brien threatened that Canadian-U.S. intelligence-sharing could be affected if Canada goes through […]
