The “security incident” that forced a New-York bound flight to make an emergency landing at LaGuardia Airport on Saturday turned out to be a misunderstanding — after an airline passenger mistook another traveler’s camera for a bomb, sources said Sunday.

American Airlines Flight 4817 from Indianapolis — operated by Republic Airways — made an emergency landing at LaGuardia just after 3 p.m., and authorities took a suspicious passenger into custody for several hours.

It turns out the would-be “bomber” was just a vintage camera aficionado and the woman who reported him made a mistake, sources said…

Biden says ‘shooting war’ could break out with foreign heavyweights over cyberattacks

The U.S. is “more likely” to end up in a “real shooting war with a major power” over a cyber incident than other kinds of conflict, President Joe Biden suggested on Tuesday. “We’ve seen how cyber threats, including ransomware attacks, increasingly are able to cause damage and disruption to the real world,” he said at a speech at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence’s National Counterterrorism Center in McLean, Virginia. “And it’s increasing exponentially — the capabilities.” While Biden delivered his speech before intelligence personnel, at least one of his intended recipients appeared to be Russian President Vladimir Putin. The Biden administration has been talking tough about Russia providing safe haven for ransomware gangs believed to be responsible for headline-making attacks on Colonial Pipeline, JBS and Kaseya. Google’s Project Zero Finds a Nation-State Zero-Day Operation

Google’s Project Zero discovered, and caused to be patched, eleven zero-day exploits against Chrome, Safari, Microsoft Windows, and iOS. This seems to have been exploited by “Western government operatives actively conducting a counterterrorism operation”:

The exploits, which went back to early 2020 and used never-before-seen techniques, were “watering hole” attacks that used infected websites to deliver malware to visitors. They caught the attention of cybersecurity experts thanks to their scale, sophistication, and speed.

It’s true that Project Zero does not formally attribute hacking to specific groups. But the Threat Analysis Group, which also worked on the project, does perform attribution. Google omitted many more details than just the name of the government behind the hacks, and through that information, the teams knew internally who the hacker and targets were. It is not clear whether Google gave advance notice to government officials that they would be publicizing and shutting down the method of attack…

Capitol Hill riot crackdown leaves extremists searching for more secure messaging platforms, US intel memo says

A law enforcement crackdown on domestic terrorists following the Capitol Hill riot will likely lead some violent extremists to turn to communications platforms they perceive to be more secure to discuss their activities, according to a U.S. intelligence bulletin obtained by CyberScoop. The arrests of Jan. 6 rioters could deter some domestic violent extremists (DVEs), but “lead others to adjust their tactics and to lessen law enforcement scrutiny,” says the Jan. 13 memo from the Department of Homeland Security, FBI and the National Counterterrorism Center. The document is marked “For Official Use Only” and was distributed to state and local law enforcement agencies. The bulletin shows how law enforcement officials are looking to track any efforts by far-right extremists to cloak their communications on encrypted platforms following the insurrection.
