Capitol Hill riot crackdown leaves extremists searching for more secure messaging platforms, US intel memo says

A law enforcement crackdown on domestic terrorists following the Capitol Hill riot will likely lead some violent extremists to turn to communications platforms they perceive to be more secure to discuss their activities, according to a U.S. intelligence bulletin obtained by CyberScoop. The arrests of Jan. 6 rioters could deter some domestic violent extremists (DVEs), but “lead others to adjust their tactics and to lessen law enforcement scrutiny,” says the Jan. 13 memo from the Department of Homeland Security, FBI and the National Counterterrorism Center. The document is marked “For Official Use Only” and was distributed to state and local law enforcement agencies. The bulletin shows how law enforcement officials are looking to track any efforts by far-right extremists to cloak their communications on encrypted platforms following the insurrection. Some of the would-be usurpers have reportedly turned to encrypted messaging platforms Telegram and Signal after crackdowns on other media. Twitter […]

State election officials will get fresh intelligence briefing after Iran tensions

In the wake of the U.S.-Iran standoff and just weeks before the first Democratic primary, the intelligence community’s lead official for election security will brief state officials on the top cyberthreats to the U.S. electoral process. Shelby Pierson, the intelligence community’s election threats executive, said that the briefing this Thursday will cover full gamut of digital threats to U.S. elections, including those emanating from Iran. Asked if Iran is more likely to interfere in the 2020 election after the U.S. military killed Tehran’s top general earlier this month, Pierson told reporters Tuesday that “it certainly is something that we’re prepared for.” “Our adversaries look to the political climate … it wouldn’t surprise me at all that this is part of the calculus,” she added. Pierson, who assumed her post last July, used a speech at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., to raise awareness about digital threats facing the […]

Improve controls on classified information, inspector general tells U.S. intelligence community

The federal government should do more to protect its most sensitive information from potentially being deleted or leaked by insiders, according to a new report from the intelligence community inspector general (ICIG). The Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) must “improve controls to efficiently and effectively manage and mitigate the risk that a trusted privileged user could inappropriately access, modify, destroy, or exfiltrate classified data,” the intelligence community inspector general, Michael Atkinson, writes in the report. The potential for trouble extends even to classified information that is restricted to a trusted few at the ODNI, the report says. The ICIG’s specific recommendations about how to address the issue, of course, are classified. The semiannual report, released Tuesday, details a number of ongoing intelligence community programs and audits meant to boost the cybersecurity of the ODNI and the intelligence community writ large, among them projects on overhauling the security clearance process and efforts […]
