Signal is having ‘technical difficulties’ amid new popularity

2021 has so far been a chaotic year, and now Signal is bearing the brunt of it. Signal users around the world began reporting issues sending messages in the mobile application Friday morning. Some users, including the author of this article, found messages took much longer to send than normal, or received a notice that the service was “unavailable” when trying to send messages. Some users told CyberScoop they were having issues as early as Thursday. Signal acknowledged in a statement the application is having “technical difficulties”, but did not offer an explanation. “We are working hard to restore service as quickly as possible,” Signal said in a tweet. Signal did not immediately respond to requests for comment about the technical difficulties and their origin. Capitol Hill riot crackdown leaves extremists searching for more secure messaging platforms, US intel memo says

A law enforcement crackdown on domestic terrorists following the Capitol Hill riot will likely lead some violent extremists to turn to communications platforms they perceive to be more secure to discuss their activities, according to a U.S. intelligence bulletin obtained by CyberScoop. The arrests of Jan. 6 rioters could deter some domestic violent extremists (DVEs), but “lead others to adjust their tactics and to lessen law enforcement scrutiny,” says the Jan. 13 memo from the Department of Homeland Security, FBI and the National Counterterrorism Center. The document is marked “For Official Use Only” and was distributed to state and local law enforcement agencies. The bulletin shows how law enforcement officials are looking to track any efforts by far-right extremists to cloak their communications on encrypted platforms following the insurrection. Cellebrite Can Break Signal

Cellebrite announced that it can break Signal. (Note that the company has heavily edited its blog post, but the original — with lots of technical details — was saved by the Wayback Machine.)

The whole story is puzzling. Cellebrite’s details will make it easier for the Signal developers to patch the vulnerability. So either Cellebrite believes it is so good that it can break whatever Signal does, or the original blog post was a mistake.
