What to expect from the Cybersecurity Solarium Commission report

A bipartisan congressional committee is urging the federal government to enact a sweeping set of cybersecurity upgrades in order to modernize American defenses on issues ranging from 5G security to stopping intellectual property theft and mitigating ransomware attacks. The Cybersecurity Solarium Commission on Wednesday will release 75 recommendations that calla for changes in the way that Congress and the Trump administration oversee crucial security issues that, if unaddressed, may jeopardize U.S. national and economic security. It remains to be seen whether some of the proposals will become a reality. In an interview with CyberScoop, Sen. Angus King, I-Maine, a co-chair of the commission, would not preview what elements of the proposal would appear in forthcoming legislation, but said between 40-50 percent of them could be seen in the 2021 National Defense Authorization Act. King says there is urgency to taking action on each of the 75 recommendations. “We want this to be […]

CrowdStrike’s co-founder steps down to launch nonprofit

Dmitri Alperovitch, CrowdStrike’s chief technology officer and co-founder, has left the company to launch a nonprofit. The organization will be a nonpartisan “policy accelerator,” Alperovitch said in a tweet Wednesday. Under Alperovitch’s leadership, CrowdStrike has gained notoriety for attributing the 2016 Democratic National Committee breach to two Russian APT groups, known as Cozy Bear and Fancy Bear. In recent months, the company has dealt with accusations from President Donald Trump that CrowdStrike had participated in a coverup of the breach. That theory, which has been debunked, came to light last year when a memorandum about a phone call between Trump and Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskiy became public. That call would later become central to the House of Representatives impeachment of Trump in December 2019. The company, which provides endpoint protection, incident response, and conducts threat intelligence research, went public on the Nasdaq last year. Since then, stock prices have been near flat, although CrowdStrike shares lost […]

Security clearance background checks should take three days, Rep. Will Hurd says

Rep. Will Hurd, who recently announced he is leaving Congress after his current term is up, has something to get off his chest. The Texas Republican has previously said he thinks the federal government should be able to issue security clearances in one week — but now he says it can be done in three days. “I never thought I would have to work on such a basic issue as this: [Getting a security clearance] shouldn’t take 9 months,” Hurd said Thursday at the Dell Technologies Forum. “I think we can do it in three days.” Currently, the federal government is currently working on overhauling the security clearance process as part of an overhaul known as Trusted Workforce 2.0 — and already in the last several months the government has made some progress on the backlog of applications. Hurd — a former CIA officer — has had a front-row seat for the process […]

Ex-NSA employees criticize Mike Rogers’ role with Israeli venture firm

Some former National Security Agency officials have strongly criticized ex-NSA Director Adm. Michael Rogers’ decision to join the advisory board of a venture capital firm that is closely linked with an Israeli intelligence agency. The company, Team8, announced Rogers’ position last week. Founded by former members of the elite Israeli army intelligence group known as Unit 8200, Team8 researches cybersecurity market demand, raises investments from big tech companies, and creates startups based on those demand signals. It also describes itself as a think tank, and does its own threat research. Rogers, who headed NSA and U.S. Cyber Command for four years before stepping down this past May, will advise companies in Team8’s portfolio as well as companies under development. The retired admiral will be “instrumental in helping strategize” Team8’s expansion in the United States, the firm said in a statement last week. Rogers’ decision to join Team8 irked Robert Lee, a former Air Force officer and former NSA employee. […]

FBI loses another cybersecurity expert to private sector

Another cybersecurity expert at the FBI is headed for the private sector. Trent Teyema, the FBI’s section chief for cyber readiness and chief operating officer of the bureau’s Cyber Division, has been named senior vice president and chief technology officer for the government-focused wing of Parsons Corporation. The move comes as a number of cybersecurity experts at the bureau have left their positions over recent months. In July, the Wall Street Journal reported that a number of top-ranking cybersecurity officials were leaving for various roles in the private sector. The FBI’s cyber readiness team works to educate enterprises on various cyberthreats and coordinate information-sharing initiatives. During his time at the bureau, Teyema helped establish the FBI’s National Cyber Investigative Joint Task Force, which is responsible for investigating cyberthreats that pose the most harm to the country. Teyema also spent time as the director of cybersecurity policy at the National Security Council from […]
