‘This isn’t IAD 2.0’: NSA’s new Cybersecurity Directorate plots its mission

The National Security Agency has started to lay the groundwork and select the leadership for its new Cybersecurity Directorate, which will be focused on fusing together signals intelligence with the agency’s cybersecurity protection mission, CyberScoop has learned. Neal Ziring, who most recently served as the NSA’s technical director for capabilities, will be the Cybersecurity Directorate’s technical director, an NSA spokesperson tells CyberScoop. Dave Frederick, the NSA’s chief of strategic counter cyber operations, will be the new deputy director, an NSA spokesperson said. In his most recent role, Ziring was responsible for acting as a liaison to both private industry and other government agencies. These are the favorites to become the next NSA director

With NSA Director Adm. Mike Rogers set to retire later this year, several prominent names are already being floated among government leaders as to who will become the next leader of the country’s premier signals intelligence agency. Vincent Stewart, deputy commander of U.S. Cyber Command, according to two current U.S. officials. Rogers’ retirement was first reported by The Washington Post and independently confirmed by CyberScoop. The Cipher Brief similarly reported on Friday […]

The man responsible for leading the National Security Agency’s defensive mission says his team is fielding more calls than ever from agencies across the government. Dangerous, highly capable hackers and a desire by agencies to adopt cloud technology have increased the workload for Information Assurance chief Paul Pitelli and his office, which he says is “sort of like the Geek Squad for defense” in government. Pitelli is a career professional who has served in the NSA for more than 20 years as the secretive spy agency transformed into what it is today — a highly sophisticated technology behemoth with an array of federal responsibilities, including both signals intelligence and protecting sensitive government systems. With the recent retirement of former Information Assurance Directorate head Curtis Dukes, a renown computer scientist and intelligence community icon, Pitelli took on an increased role in an ever important effort to ensure that the Defense Department and broader government […]
