Norway says Russian hackers carried out breach at parliament

Russian state-sponsored hackers were behind a breach of the Norwegian parliament in August in which attackers stole data from lawmakers’ email accounts, Norwegian officials alleged on Tuesday. “This is a very serious incident, affecting our most important democratic institution,” Norway Foreign Affairs Minister Ine Eriksen Søreide said in a statement. “Based on the information the government has, it is our view that Russia is responsible for these activities.” The incident, and the suggestion of foreign political interference, has been a topic of significant contention for Norwegian national security officials. Among the victims of the breach were members of the opposition Labour Party and the Centre Party, according to local media reports. The Russian Embassy in Washington, D.C., did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Tuesday on the accusation. The Russian Embassy in Oslo balked at the allegations, calling them “unacceptable” and “destructive for bilateral relations.” Norway is a […]

Norway is investigating a cyberattack on its parliament

Hackers have struck at the Norwegian parliament, compromising a limited number of email accounts of lawmakers and employees, the parliament’s administrator said Tuesday. Attackers downloaded an unspecified amount of data in the breach, Marianne Andreassen, the administrator, said in a statement. Mitigations put in place to counter the digital intrusion had an “immediate effect,” Andreassen said. Among the victims were members of the opposition Labour Party and the Centre Party, Norwegian broadcaster NRK reported. Andreassen did not identify who was responsible. A police and national security investigation is ongoing, and Andreassen said investigators are still gathering a full picture of the impact of the hack. The Norwegian National Security Authority (NSM), a government cybersecurity agency, “has contributed with incident response, analysis and other measures during the cyber incident against the Norwegian parliament,” said Trond Øvstedal, a spokesman for the agency. NSM “will provide technical support in the investigation,” he added. National legislatures are […]

Scammers steal $10 million from Norfund, the largest sovereign wealth fund

Thieves spent months inside the networks of the world’s largest sovereign wealth fund before stealing $10 million in what the enterprise is describing as “a serious case of fraud.” The Norwegian Investment Fund, more commonly known as Norfund, announced Wednesday that scammers stole £8.2 million ($10 million) by spoofing an email address, then fabricating payment information and directing cash into their own account. In a statement, Norfund said the incident is still under investigation, though it acknowledged “that our existing systems and routines were not secure enough.” Norfund is a Norway state-owned private equity firm which invests in developing countries throughout the world by supporting renewable energy infrastructure and scalable businesses, particularly in the manufacturing and agricultural sectors. This financial heist only is the latest to affect large international firms, following a $29 million scam affecting the publishing conglomerate Nikkei and the attempted theft of $951 million from Bangladesh’s central […]

European health care giant Fresenius Group grappling with computer virus

Fresenius Group, a big European health care conglomerate, said Wednesday that a computer virus had infected at least one of its businesses’ IT systems. It’s another sign that malicious hackers see medical organizations as fair game despite a global health crisis. The Germany-based corporation said the security incident had hampered some production in its pharmaceutical business, Fresenius Kabi, which makes everything from nutritional products and infusion therapies to pain relievers that are in high demand during the coronavirus pandemic. Fresenius Group spokesperson Steffen Rinas declined to specify which production units were affected by the malware. He did say that Fresenius’s hospitals — said to be the largest private network in Europe — were not affected by the incident. The company did not specify the nature of the virus. “As a precautionary measure in accordance with the security protocol drawn up for such cases, steps have been taken to prevent further spread,” Rinas said in an email. “Nevertheless, our production […]
