Firefox Lockbox app aims to reduce password management hassles for Android users

The makers of the Firefox web browser are putting their own spin on password manager software, launching a new app intended to help Android device users get broader access to the logins that already follow them around via their Firefox accounts. The new Firefox Lockbox is directly tied to whatever a user saves all day within their browser, meaning there is “no extra set-up necessary,” according to a blog post from Mozilla, the organization that maintains Firefox. The main selling point seems to be convenience: A classic password manager like LastPass or 1Password exists in its own ecosystem, requiring users to fill it up with information by hand or through features like browser extensions. “This makes Firefox Lockbox the perfect solution for people who want to secure their personal information, but may not have time (or the recall) to choose and transfer all of their passwords into a password manager,” Mozilla says. It’s […]

Sneaky motion-detection feature found on Android malware

A strain of malicious software was activated on Android smartphones only when the infected phone was moved, according to research published by security vendor Trend Micro. The malware came embedded in seemingly legitimate apps Currency Converter and BatterySaverMobi, which were available in the Google Play Store, Trend Micro said Thursday. Once downloaded, the malware sought to avoid detection by monitoring the motion sensor on victims’ devices. The logic seems to be that if a hacked phone was moving, the device probably wasn’t a research tool being used by a security company trying to detect malware, researchers said. “As a user moves, their device usually generates some amount of motion sensor data,” the company explained in a blog post. “The malware developer is assuming that the sandbox for scanning malware is an emulator with no motion sensors, and as such will not create that type of data. … If it senses that […]

Cutely named apps siphon user data from phones

The mobile applications have innocuous-sounding names like Flappy Birr Dog and Flappy Bird, but something sinister lurks inside. Spyware masquerading as those Android apps and others were downloaded over 100,000 times from the Google Play store last year, cybersecurity company Trend Micro said Thursday. Google has removed all of the apps from the store, but the episode is a reminder of the ease with which crooks can hide their malware in popular app markets. The spyware is capable of siphoning call logs, SMS conversations, and clipboard items from a user’s phone, according to Trend Micro. Users in scores of countries around the world were affected, researchers said, with a third of infections taking place in India. The so-called MobSTSPY spyware uses a cloud-messaging service to send the stolen information to a command-and-control server, registering the infected device. The malware then lies in wait for the attacker to send it commands from […]
