German investigators treating ransomware attack as negligent homicide, reports say

German prosecutors last week opened a homicide investigation into a deadly ransomware incident on a university hospital, according to multiple German media reports. If confirmed, it would be the first documented case of a death stemming, directly or indirectly, from a cyberattack, analysts say. Christoph Hebbecker, a cybercrime prosecutor in the German city of Cologne, said Friday that his office had opened an investigation into the ransomware attack as a “negligent homicide,” the Germany news agency DPA reported. The investigation centers around a ransomware infection that hobbled the IT systems of the University of Duesseldorf’s main hospital earlier this month. The disruption forced a critically ill patient to be redirected to a hospital 20 miles away. The patient later died, according to German media reports. Hebbecker’s spokesperson did not return a request for comment on Monday. The incident highlights the starkly different risks facing organizations with vulnerable software. For some, […]

European police bust Polish gang suspected of hacking and stealing cars

German and Polish police agencies announced Wednesday they had dismantled a Polish criminal network accused of stealing dozens of cars by breaching the keyless systems used to start the vehicles. The alleged thieves had racked up at least 34 vehicles worth $1.6 million by the time investigators raided their properties in Poland last week, according to Europol, the European Union’s law enforcement agency. The alleged Polish criminal network appears to be reeling. Seven of its suspected members were arrested last year, and two more in recent months, Europol said. It is unclear exactly how the hacking went down; Europol would only say that the suspects used “technical equipment” to crack the “Keyless Go” systems that allow a driver to unlock and start a car electronically. A Europol spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment. “This is a known issue that has kept car companies up at night […]

German police seize DDoSecrets server distributing ‘BlueLeaks’ files

German law enforcement officials have seized a server belonging to an anti-secrecy organization that recently published a trove of data stolen from U.S. police agencies, the group’s co-founder says. Emma Best, who helps lead the Distributed Denial of Secrets group, said in a tweet Tuesday that prosecutors in the municipality of Zwickau have taken the group’s “primary public download server.” In an advisory that Best tweeted, police said the server was seized by the department of public prosecution. “Please understand that we are not allowed to provide any further information regarding this case,” note states. The move comes weeks after DDoSecrets published the BlueLeaks files, a 269 GB collection of materials taken from U.S. law enforcement bodies, including police training materials, safety guides and instructions on how to contain demonstrations. DDoSecrets published BlueLeaks amid ongoing U.S. protests following the police killing of George Floyd and other unarmed Black Americans. German […]
