In issuing 5G recommendations, E.U. spurns U.S. hardline on Huawei

European Union officials on Tuesday released recommendations for member countries to manage cybersecurity risk stemming from 5G communications networks, declining to embrace a U.S.-led effort to ditch gear made by Chinese telecom giant Huawei. The EU’s executive body instead asked each member state to conduct a “national risk assessment” of 5G infrastructure by the end of June, and made suggestions “to protect our economies, societies and democratic systems.” The commission wants suppliers and operators of 5G networks to tighten security protocols, and member states to work to develop “EU-wide certification schemes related to 5G.” 5G networks, which Europe has lagged behind the U.S. and China in deploying, promise faster data transfers and greater connectivity. But experts warn they could also introduce greater cybersecurity risk. “Any vulnerability in 5G networks or a cyber-attack targeting the future networks in one Member State would affect the Union as a whole,” the European Commission […]

DHS officials plan Europe trip to brief allies on election security, gather intel for 2020

Department of Homeland Security officials plan to visit European allies to share lessons learned from defending the 2018 U.S. midterm elections, a top DHS official said Tuesday. “What we’re doing is taking some of the ’16 and ’18 lessons learned, packaging them together, and then doing a bit of a roadshow,” Chris Krebs, head of DHS’s Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, told reporters. Details of the trip are still being finalized, but Krebs said it also would offer CISA officials an update from the field on adversary activity ahead of the 2020 U.S. presidential election. Many millions of Europeans are expected to head to the polls in late May to choose new representatives in the European Union parliament. European officials have issued a series of warnings that Russia is likely to interfere in the vote, including an assessment last week from Estonia’s foreign intelligence agency. In another key election, Ukrainians will choose a […]

Kremlin interference in EU vote is likely, says Estonian spy agency

Estonia’s foreign intelligence agency says it is “very likely” that the Russian government will try to interfere in the European Union parliamentary elections in May. The Kremlin’s meddling will likely focus on France, Germany and Italy, which hold the most EU parliamentary seats, in a concerted effort to “secure as many seats as possible for pro-Russian or euro-skeptical political forces,” the Estonian Foreign Intelligence Service said Tuesday in an external security report focused on threats from Russia. The European Parliament’s status as the only EU institution directly elected by the people makes it a prime target for Russian influence operations, the EFIS said, adding that the proportional election system favors marginal parties and that Members of European Parliament (MEPs) can be used as mouthpieces for Russian propaganda. The Kremlin has wooed European politicians by inviting them to a 2016 conference in the Crimea, which Russia annexed in 2014, the report […]

Has the fight over privacy changed at all in 2019?

Few issues divide the tech community quite like privacy. Much of Silicon Valley’s wealth has been built on data-driven advertising platforms, and yet, there remain constant concerns about the invasiveness of those platforms. Such concerns have intensified in just the last few weeks as France’s privacy regulator placed a record fine on Google under Europe’s […] Continue reading Has the fight over privacy changed at all in 2019?
