An ongoing hacking campaign targets dissidents in Egypt, researchers say

Security researchers on Thursday detailed an ongoing hacking campaign against Egyptian human rights activists and journalists, showing how the attackers have planted their own malware in the Google Play Store to track their victims. An analysis of the hacking campaign by Check Point Software Technologies highlights how the hackers have not only used third-party apps to gain access to victim emails but also employed stealthy mobile apps that log the date and duration of calls, or the location of the caller. Evidence suggests the Egyptian government could be behind the activity, which dates back to 2016 and is more multifaceted than previously documented. If definitively tied to Egyptian authorities, it would be just the latest example of an autocratic regime aiming software tools at activists and critics. Under President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, the Egyptian government has cracked down further on dissent, jailing activists and, NGOs say, abusing human rights. “We saw [the […]

Facebook shuts down ‘coordinated inauthentic behavior’ from Egypt, Saudi Arabia, UAE

In the latest sign that fake accounts remain a popular tool for amplifying political messages on Facebook, the social media company says it has disrupted information campaigns emanating from Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. The hundreds of disabled accounts, groups and pages were involved in two unrelated operations, one originating in Egypt and the UAE, and the other in Saudi Arabia. The campaigns — which Facebook labeled as “coordinated inauthentic behavior” also included accounts on Instagram, which Facebook owns. Both campaigns used phony pages to post news in support of a political agenda, and both focused on countries in the Middle East and North Africa, Facebook said. The company linked the latter campaign, which supported Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman, to the Saudi government. “We’re taking down these pages, groups and accounts based on their behavior, not the content they posted,” Nathaniel Gleicher, Facebook’s head of cybersecurity policy, wrote […]

ISPs inside Turkey and Egypt spread FinFisher spyware in massive espionage campaign

An expansive and ongoing computer espionage campaign spread across Egypt, Turkey and Syria has been powered by technology developed by a Canadian-American networking company, SandVine, and an infamous spyware maker known as GammaGroup or Lench IT Solutions, security researchers say. New research by human rights advocacy organization Citizen Lab shows how products made by two Western technology contractors facilitated nationwide surveillance in multiple developing countries under authoritarian rule. The findings piggyback on prior reporting by a Slovakian cybersecurity company, which also discovered similar “man-in-the-middle” cyberattacks at the internet service provider (ISP) level in September and December. People getting online through local ISPs in Egypt, Turkey and Syria were tricked into installing highly intrusive spyware that allows the attacker to gain full access of an infected device, including its microphone and camera. Whenever targeted users in Turkey attempted to access certain websites to install free software, they were instead covertly served up a nearly identical but boobytrapped […]
