The Institute for Security and Technology received a $450,000 donation from Craig Newmark Philanthropies to continue its work combatting ransomware, the organization shared first with CyberScoop. The money will go towards continuing the work started by the Ransomware Task Force, a public-private collaboration launched earlier this year by the Insitute. The task force brought together representatives from more than 60 companies and organizations across government, nonprofits and the private sector. Microsoft, Rapid 7, the Cyber Threat Alliance, FBI and the Department of Homeland Security’s Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency are among the participants. The Ransomware Task Force released a report at the end of April offering four dozen recommendations for policymakers and industry to take on the problem. The task force recommended that governments establish a fund to support ransomware response, and closer regulation of the cryptocurrency. Over nearly a decade, cybersecurity-related philanthropic giving has constituted a fraction of one percent of the billions of dollars devoted to peace and security causes. An open letter Friday signed by trade associations, non-profits, charitable foundations, think tanks and well-known cybersecurity professionals aims to change that trend as part of what could be a series of future steps. “We believe that private philanthropy is ideally suited to support the development of an emerging field of theorists and practitioners across cybersecurity domains,” reads the letter. “Anyone who cares about national security, innovation, economic development, personal privacy, or civil liberties should care about cybersecurity. Private philanthropy is a critical missing piece to meet this urgent need.” The William Flora and Hewlett Foundation, Craig Newmark Philanthropies, and Gula Tech Foundation led the effort to organize the letter, signed by 30 different organizations and individuals. Craigslist founder Craig Newmark’s philanthropic organization will provide more than $1 million to the Global Cyber Alliance with the aim of securing media and election offices before the 2020 presidential election, GCA announced Tuesday. Craig Newmark Philanthropies will give $1.068 million to GCA, which has provided security tools to 7,300 public and private sector organizations, to protect journalists, secure voting-focused nonprofit organizations and enable election boards to invest in “cybersecurity protections to preserve election integrity,” GCA said in an announcement. The guidance will include tips from the Center for Internet Security’s top Critical Controls, which encourage planning, security audits and other best practices. The philanthropic organization has donated tens of millions to media organizations and journalism schools in recent years.
