PinK: A new way of implementing a key-value store in SSDs

As web services, cloud storage, and big-data services continue expanding and finding their way into our lives, the gigantic hardware infrastructures they rely on–known as data centers – need to be improved to keep up with the current demand… Continue reading PinK: A new way of implementing a key-value store in SSDs

Die Lapping For Better CPU Performance

CPUs generate their heat in the silicon die that does all those wonderful calculations which make our computers work. But silicon conducts heat fairly poorly, so the thinner your CPU die, the better it will conduct heat out to the heatsink. This theoretically promises better cooling and thus more scope …read more

64-bit And A Display: Minecraft Computers 10 Years Later

Some people build their own computer to play games, while others play games to build their own computer. Minecraft is the prime candidate for the latter, and while you can certainly arrange the blocks to make them look like a computer, we’re of course talking about replicating the actual functionality …read more

Breadboard Computer Plays Snake on Character Display; Also In A Browser!

If building a homebrew computer on a breadboard is your thing, you’re most certainly familiar with [Ben Eater], whose design of using nothing but logic gates has served as inspiration for many replicas over the years. [visrealm] took the concept and expanded upon it, even adding a 16×2 LCD that …read more

Hackable firmware lurks inside Dell, HP and Lenovo computers amid supply chain security efforts

A stealthy hacking technique that could make it possible for attackers to access different components inside PCs made by the likes of Dell, HP and Lenovo still exists, five years after researchers first warned of it. Security researchers from Eclypsium, in findings published Tuesday, demonstrated how much of the firmware inside modern computers, such as webcams, USB hubs, trackpads and other internal hardware could be updated with “unsigned” code that’s not designed by the device vendor. That firmware, left unprotected, could provide outsiders with a gateway into more sensitive computer networks, all while PC customers implicitly trust their machine to safeguard their data. (The company only pointed to theoretical attacks, rather than an active, ongoing campaign against these devices.) “Firmware is meant to be invisible to the user, and so it’s not surprising that most people don’t pay attention to it,” said Eclypsium CEO Yuriy Bulgin. “However, these components make up […]
