Are Fake COVID Testing Sites Harvesting Data?

Over the past few weeks, I’ve seen a bunch of writing about what seems to be fake COVID-19 testing sites. They take your name and info, and do a nose swab, but you never get test results. Speculation centered around data harvesting, but that didn’t make sense because it was far too labor intensive for that and — sorry to break it to you — your data isn’t worth all that much.

It seems to be multilevel marketing fraud instead:

The Center for COVID Control is a management company to Doctors Clinical Laboratory. It provides tests and testing supplies, software, personal protective equipment and marketing services — online and printed — to testing sites, said a person who was formerly associated with the Center for COVID Control. Some of the sites are owned independently but operate in partnership with the chain under its name and with its guidance…

‘Abundance of caution’ pushes RSA Conference to June

The RSA Conference has been delayed until June out of “an abundance of caution,” given the recent surge in COVID-19 cases across the country caused by the omicron variant, organizers say. The annual cybersecurity industry gathering, usually held in February, will begin June 6 in San Francisco. “The health and safety of our community remains our highest priority,” said Linda Gray Martin, vice president, RSA Conference. “With the surge in cases of the Omicron variant in the U.S. and around the world, we believe the best decision we can make is to delay the event until later in the year when we can bring the industry safely together in-person.” RSAC was last held in person in 2020. Despite rising concerns about the coronavirus and several vendors pulling out, 36,000 participants attended in person that year. The organization reported afterward that two Exabeam employees who attended tested positive for the coronavirus. […]

Meta scrubbed a fake scientist’s account that spread bogus COVID-19 claims

On July 24, 2021 a Swiss biologist, Wilson Edwards, claimed on Facebook and Twitter that the United States was pressuring the World Health Organization to blame the origin of COVID-19 on the Chinese government. Within an hour, Chinese officials were promoting the message on social media, using the apparent claim to turn public opinion against the U.S. after China attracted scrutiny for reportedly rejected further investigation into the origins of the virus. But Wilson Edwards wasn’t real, the Swiss Embassy in Beijing announced on Twitter on August 10. Instead, the ruse was a part of an elaborate coordinated campaign based in China to discredit the U.S., researchers at Meta, which is owned by Facebook, revealed in a report out Wednesday. What researchers found was a “hall of mirrors,” Ben Nimmo, global information operations threat intelligence lead at Facebook said in the report. In total, Facebook removed 524 Facebook accounts, 20 pages, […]
