Biometric device revenues to drop 22%, expected to rebound in 2021

In the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, global biometric device revenues are expected to drop 22%, ($1.8 billion) to $6.6 billion, according to a report from ABI Research. The entire biometrics market, however, will regain momentum in 2021 and is ex… Continue reading Biometric device revenues to drop 22%, expected to rebound in 2021

Detecting Deep Fakes with a Heartbeat

Researchers can detect deep fakes because they don’t convincingly mimic human blood circulation in the face:

In particular, video of a person’s face contains subtle shifts in color that result from pulses in blood circulation. You might imagine that t… Continue reading Detecting Deep Fakes with a Heartbeat

3D finger-vein ID tech claimed to be virtually foolproof

According to its creators, however, a new 3D finger vein-scanning system cannot be duped.Continue ReadingCategory: Science… Continue reading 3D finger-vein ID tech claimed to be virtually foolproof

IG finds data security practices lacking at Customs and Border Protection before big hack

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency failed to enforce basic security practices at a contractor that was hacked last year, exposing some 100,000 individual photos of travelers, a new inspector general report has found. Some of the hacked images ended up on the dark web, but the entire episode “may damage the public’s trust in the government’s ability to safeguard biometric data,” the Department of Homeland Security’s inspector general concluded in a report released Wednesday. It’s an example of how, as federal immigration and security agencies increasingly draw on biometric data for their work, the stakes for protecting that data from hackers have grown. The data collection was for a CBP pilot to use facial recognition to screen travelers at ports of entry. The project went awry when surveillance technology company Perceptics, a subcontractor, downloaded sensitive CBP data from an unencrypted device and transferred it to the company’s network, […]

Facing gender bias in facial recognition technology

In the 1960s, Woodrow W. Bledsoe created a secret program that manually identified points on a person’s face and compared the distances between these coordinates with other images. Facial recognition technology has come a long way since then. The field… Continue reading Facing gender bias in facial recognition technology

Yet Another Biometric: Bioacoustic Signatures

Sound waves through the body are unique enough to be a biometric: "Modeling allowed us to infer what structures or material features of the human body actually differentiated people," explains Joo Yong Sim, one of the ETRI researchers who conducted the study. "For example, we could see how the structure, size, and weight of the bones, as well as the… Continue reading Yet Another Biometric: Bioacoustic Signatures
