Proofpoint acquires Wombat Security Technologies for $225 million

Proofpoint has announced it has entered into an agreement to purchase Pittsburgh-based Wombat Security Technologies for $225 million in cash. By acquiring Wombat, the Sunnyvale, California-based company adds phishing simulation and security training to its suite of products. Proofpoint’s established products and solutions include email security, advanced threat protection and data archiving. Proofpoint also will incorporate Wombat’s PhishAlarm into its threat intelligence products, with the goal of providing broader visibility and intelligence when it comes to phishing attacks. More than of half of all respondents (53 percent) to a Wombat-authored study dealt with spearphishing attacks in 2017. Because threat actors target employees as the weakest link, companies need to continuously train employees and arm them with real-time threat data,” said Gary Steele, Proofpoint CEO, in announcing the deal Tuesday. “The acquisition of Wombat gives us greater ability to help protect our customers from today’s people-centric cyberattacks, as cybercriminals look for new […]

Thales acquires chip giant Gemalto in $5.6B all-cash deal

French technology giant Thales SA will acquire digital security company Gemalto after outbidding a rival French company whose bid was rejected. Thales will acquire Gemalto — the world’s largest manufacturer of SIM cards and credit card chips — in an all-cash transaction worth €4.76 billion ($5.6 billion), beating an offer from rival Atos that was valued at €4.3 billion ($5.06 billion). Gemalto said Atos’ bid significantly had undervalued the company. Known more for its work in aerospace, Thales has spent the past three years focusing on cybersecurity and artificial intelligence. As part of that effort, the company has acquired a host of others, including Sysgo, Vormetric and Guavus. “The acquisition of Gemalto marks a key milestone in the implementation of Thales’s strategy,” Patrice Caine, Thales’s chairman and chief executive officer, said in a release. “Together with Gemalto’s management, we have big ambitions based on a shared vision of the digital transformation of our industries […]

Elevation of Cyber Command will make it more like its elite brethren

Buried deep in President Donald Trump’s decision to elevate U.S. Cyber Command to a full-fledged unified combatant command is a detail that will eventually herald important changes to the way its military cyber personnel are going to be trained — and one that helps illuminate how the U.S.’ understanding of cyber war is changing. The elevation announcement earlier this month was mandated by Congress was widely anticipated for months, if not years. According to current and former Pentagon officials, Adm. Michael Rogers, the four-star commander of Cyber Command, already has pretty much the same authorities the commanders of the other nine UCCs enjoy, including the highest profile ones — a direct line to the Secretary of Defense and a seat at the budget deliberations table. “On paper, the chain of command goes through U.S. Strategic Command,” the UCC to which Cyber Command is currently subordinate as it awaits elevation, explained former Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense […]
