Redundant, Secure, and Open Short Domains: A Vision for Multi-Provider Apex Domain Aliases to Enable DNS Diversity

Human nature is to seek simpler and convenient ways to do things. One example is the sometimes onerous task of typing a URL into a web browser’s address bar. Since users prefer short, easy-to-remember URLs, an internet trend is to use short domains for websites (e.g., edgedns.zone). With short website names, users benefit from the convenience of fewer characters to remember and type. Akamai Load Balancing to Lock-in Quality

As Akamai’s Global Traffic Management for Cloud, Data Centers and CDNs blog introduces, Akamai’s Intelligent Edge™ platform includes DNS and Layer 7 load balancing capabilities that combine to get users to the right edge at the right time. In this blog, Akamai poses a use case and describes how to address it using Akamai Global Traffic Management (GTM) and Application Load Balancing (ALB). Deployment Diversity for DNS Resiliency

Fast, reliable, and secure edge services kick start by optimizing DNS for the global edge. Website performance starts with DNS. Ironically, too much attention is spent on other areas of edge service deployments leaving DNS as an afterthought. As a result, website performance can often not meet expectations, all because of DNS neglect. Akamai sees too many organizations overlooking the DNS critical dependency for edge performance and security. Edge deployments can be a deterrent for DoS attacks but are still vulnerable to attacks if the hosting organization centralizes DNS. DoS attacking central DNS services, in effect, disrupts edge services, negating the advantage of massive edge deployments. To remain available through incidents such as DoS attacks, utilize a segmented, diverse DNS IP anycast architecture to always connect with users. Architecting DNS for DDoS Durability and Resilience

After many years of hard work from many Internet engineers and system administrators, Akamai Technologies has been working towards DNS infrastructure that would be ready for service 24/7, 365 days a year with beyond five 9s availability and the architecture to thwart any form of DNS attack.
