Report: Kaspersky Lab to open new data center in Switzerland to curb espionage suspicions

Hoping to curb suspicions surrounding its alleged relationship to Russian intelligence, Moscow-based cybersecurity company Kaspersky Lab is set to start building a new data center in Switzerland, Reuters reports.  The aim is to address recent concerns that Russian spies have supposedly leveraged the anti-virus platform to steal confidential files, according to documents seen by Reuters. In an official statement, the company explains that this new building is part of their larger Global Transparency Initiative. “We understand that during a time of geopolitical tension, mirrored by an increasingly complex cyber-threat landscape, people may have questions and we want to address them,” a company statement reads.  The Swiss lab will store and analyze malicious computer files with unusual characteristics that come from customers geographically located in the United States and European Union. Only “abnormal” files will be sent on to Kaspersky headquarters in Moscow for further manual review. A source told Reuters that 99.6 percent […]

Army pioneer heads to Army Cyber Command

Command Sgt. Maj. Sheryl Lyon hopes she’s eased the path for future female military leaders. After almost three years at U.S. Army Europe, Lyon is leaving for an assignment at Army Cyber Command in Virginia. Lyon was the army’s first female senior leader at a service component command. She will be the senior enlisted leader at Army Cyber Command, serving in the role of the command sergeant major. “I hope that I’ve been able to help pave the way, that it’s based on capability for positions instead of gender or ethnicity or anything like that,” Lyon told Stars and Stripes. Lyon, a trained intelligence analyst, believes she can “bring some knowledge and past experience that will help in that realm that will help advance it as well.” Founded in 2010, Army Cyber Command is the cyberwarfare unit tasked with protecting Army computer systems and using hacking tools to support soldiers […]

Seoul claims North Korea stole millions worth of cryptocurrency from domestic exchanges

Pyongyang’s continued pilfering of cryptocurrency exchanges has racked in millions of dollars for the hermit kingdom. Government officials in Seoul say North Korean hackers targeted and successfully stole cryptocurrencies from businesses and traders based in South Korea worth billions of won last year. Won is the domestic currency of South Korea; one billion won translates to about 920,000 U.S. dollars.  North Korea’s use of cybercrime to finance domestic development projects is well-documented. North Korean hackers have used a variety of tactics to steal cryptocurrency from individuals and companies, alike. Kim Byung-kee, a member of South Korea’s parliamentary intelligence committee, told Reuters on Monday that “North Korea [had] sent emails that could hack into cryptocurrency exchanges and their customers’ private information and stole (cryptocurrency) worth billions of won” over the last 12 months. The National Intelligence Service (NIS) of South Korea recently stated that North Korea-linked hackers neutralized a South Korean company’s anti-hacking system […]

Cybersecurity pros will get paid more in 2018 than ever before, headhunting firms say

With cyberattacks becoming more commonplace, the need for top security professionals has prompted a notable rise in salaries. Research from recruitment firm Robert Walters predicts that cybersecurity salaries will rise 7 percent in 2018. The broader information technology sector is also expected to experience a 2 percent salary increase overall. Josh Fisher, a senior vice president for D.C.-based professional staffing firm HireStrategy, told CyberScoop, that “conservative forecasts for cybersecurity salary increases in 2018, would be in the 10 to 15 percent range based on supply and demand in that space.” Cybersecurity professionals have been asking for higher wages, and with the need to hire top talent, companies typically accommodate their requests, experts say. A recent study from (ISC)2 showed that by 2022 there will be a shortage of 1.8 million professionals to work in IT. Last year, a Stanford University research program found that cybersecurity job postings on popular hiring websites […]

Alex Stamos, Facebook’s chief security officer, announced Monday the company will be accepting submissions through a new granted-based initiative titled “Secure the Internet Grants.” The social media giant told CyberScoop that they do not have “a set number of recipients” in mind for the program. A spokesperson further clarified that, when going through the decision making process, they will be “focused on the practical impact it could have on end users.” The company will hand out up to $100,000 per accepted proposal for future development. Awarded recipients will be offered these grant awards during a planned presentation at Black Hat USA 2018 in Las Vegas.
