Alien hurricanes could rage on other planets under conditions completely different to Earth

Hurricanes and water go hand in hand – they form over oceans, use warm moist air as an energy source, and are known to dump huge amounts of rain onto areas in their path. But researchers from Purdue University and MIT have now made a surprisi… Continue reading Alien hurricanes could rage on other planets under conditions completely different to Earth

Wearable would release life-saving meds when drug-users OD

When someone overdoses on opioid drugs, which is happening increasingly often, an injection of naloxone could save their life … if it’s administered soon enough. A wearable system that’s currently in development is intended to make tha… Continue reading Wearable would release life-saving meds when drug-users OD

The new "superbugs": Cockroaches evolve resistance to pesticides they haven't even encountered

A cockroach feeds on an insecticide in the lab portion of new experiments at Purdue University

It’s bad enough that bacteria are quickly developing resistance to our best antibiotics – now it looks like another kind of bug will soon earn the “super” moniker. Cockroaches have been known to develop resistances to individual insecticides for decades, but new research has shown that they’re also able to rapidly develop cross-resistance, even to chemicals that they’ve never been directly exposed to.

Researchers uncover 4G LTE exploits that can be used to spy, spoof and cause panic

Vulnerabilities in a common wireless telecommunications standard could allow hackers to send a fake emergency alert message to almost anyone’s smartphone. Researchers from Purdue University and the University of Iowa say they’ve discovered 10 new vulnerabilities in the 4G LTE protocol that can disrupt victims’ devices in several ways. They present the new findings in a paper published last month that showcases a tool they developed in order to detect such vulnerabilities. Among the new attacks, the researchers highlight an authentication relay attack, which they say allows an attacker to connect to an LTE network while spoofing another existing device’s identity and location. This is done without having legitimate credentials. “Through this attack the adversary can poison the location of the victim device in the core networks, thus allowing setting up a false alibi or planting fake evidence during a criminal investigation,” the paper says. The researchers explain that the 4G LTE protocol […]
