Volkswagen teases the California 6.1 ahead of an upcoming debut

Earlier this year, Volkswagen announced the updated T6 van, dubbing it T6.1. In addition to roaming highways and worksites, the T6.1 van will slide its way under an updated California camper van. Volkswagen previewed the revised version of its icon this week ahead of a planned world premiere next month. The updated camper van gets some interior and exterior touchups, a new camper command center to complement the van’s digital cockpit, and some new driver-assistance features that are sure to help out on the way to and from camp.

Westfalia is known the world over for its pop-up camper vans, so much so that you’ll still find terms like “Westfalia-style roof” substituted for “pop-up roof,” even though many other companies around the world offer them. But Westfalia’s latest pop-top van features a little more “pop” than even longtime fans might be expecting. In addition to popping up, the all-new James Cook expands out the back, increasing interior space and bed size. The sub-6-m (19.8-ft) James Cook combines the everyday maneuverability of a Sprinter 144 with the living space of a longer-wheelbase van, and it packs the latest smart home-style camper tech to boot.

We’ve been watching the new third-generation Mercedes-Benz Sprinter morph into different camper vans in Germany, the UK and the US. Now Australia’s Trakka, builder of small on- and off-road motorhomes, has given us our first look at a gen-3 Sprinter camper van from down under, and it’s arguably the most impressive yet. The Jabiru camper van uses a full off-grid power suite and multifunctional, space-optimizing components to support highway and backway adventurers as they escape on quick holidays or extended off-grid expeditions.
