Court hands Microsoft control of websites linked to spying by Chinese hackers

Microsoft obtained a court order to seize websites from a Chinese government-linked espionage group that was using the sites to attack government agencies, think tanks and human rights organizations in 29 countries, the company said Monday. The legal move is aimed at a hacking outfit that Microsoft calls Nickel, which is also known as APT15, Ke3chang or Vixen Panda. It’s been around since at least 2010, and frequently spies on foreign affairs of interest to China. “Obtaining control of the malicious websites and redirecting traffic from those sites to Microsoft’s secure servers will help us protect existing and future victims while learning more about Nickel’s activities,” wrote Tom Burt, Microsoft’s corporate vice president for customer security and trust. “Our disruption will not prevent Nickel from continuing other hacking activities, but we do believe we have removed a key piece of the infrastructure the group has been relying on for this […]

‘Machete’ cyber-espionage group goes after military in Venezuela

In March, there were massive, days-long power outages in Venezuela, causing several fatalities and pushing the South American country into turmoil that has continued to the present day. Around the same time as the first outages, a cyber-espionage group — dubbed “Machete” by ESET — began siphoning off gigabytes of confidential documents from Venezuela’s military in a successful campaign that is ongoing, according to new research from ESET. While there are some compromised computers in Ecuador, Colombia, and Nicaragua, the primary focus is Venezuela, as over half of the compromised computers in the campaign belong to the Venezuelan military, according to the Slovakian cybersecurity company. ESET researchers write that until May of this year, more than 50 computers were actively communicating with the attackers’ command and control server and bleeding gigabytes-worth of data each week. The toolset used by Machete is capable of stealing documents commonly used in the office […]

Twitter scrubs nearly 5,000 accounts tied to state-backed information operations

Twitter said Thursday it has removed thousands of accounts associated with six state-backed disinformation campaigns from Iran, Russia, Venezuela, and Spain. The 4,946 accounts taken off the social media site engaged in malicious activity ranging from the amplification of political propaganda and the impersonation of American politicians, among other terms of service violations, the company said. Twitter has “reliably” linked the accounts with state-affiliated organizations, Yoel Roth, chief of site integrity, said in a blog post. But the takedowns also demonstrate how, even as Silicon Valley invests more resources into uncovering this kind of activity, governments still are exploiting Twitter’s influence. “We only disclose datasets associated with coordinated malicious activity that we are able to reliably associate with state-affiliated actors,” Roth wrote. The goal of sharing these campaigns is to enable researchers to further analyze disinformation so the world can better respond to it, especially as it relates to elections, he […]
