Dark Overlord collaborator gets 3 years in prison for buying and selling stolen identities

An associate of the Dark Overlord hacking group has been sentenced to three years in prison for his role in possessing and selling more than 1,700 stolen identities on the dark web, federal prosecutors announced Wednesday. Slava Dmitriev, a 29-year-old Canadian citizen who was apprehended in Greece in September 2020, pleaded guilty in August 2021 to fraud charges. Prosecutors said he used the handle “GoldenAce” to buy and sell stolen identities on the dark web marketplace AlphaBay in 2016 and 2017. Those deals sometimes included contact with the Dark Overlord, a notorious cyber-extortion crew. “This defendant profited off buying and selling people’s stolen identities, including victims in this district,” said U.S. Attorney Kurt Erskine, referring to the Atlanta-based Northern District of Georgia, where Dmitriev was sentenced. Hackers fire off hoax email messages from FBI account after exploiting misconfigured server

Hackers sent a barrage of fake emails over the weekend using an FBI email account, the agency acknowledged, to falsely warn recipients that an attacker stole their information. The nonprofit spam-tracking service Spamhaus Project estimated that the hoax email campaign comprised as many as 100,000 messages. The FBI said that the hackers temporarily broke in via a software misconfiguration for its Law Enforcement Enterprise Portal that the bureau uses to communicate with state and local law enforcement agencies. “While the illegitimate email originated from an FBI operated server, that server was dedicated to pushing notifications for LEEP and was not part of the FBI’s corporate email service,” the FBI said in a Sunday update. “No actor was able to access or compromise any data or PII on the FBI’s network.” The email campaign sought to smear Vinny Troia, a cybersecurity author and CEO of Night Lion Security, as the party […]

‘Dark Overlord’ hacker pleads guilty, sentenced to 5 years for extortion threats

Years after he threatened to publicly release information from hacking victims unless they agreed to his digital extortion demands, Nathan Wyatt is headed to a U.S. prison. A judge in the Eastern District of Missouri on Monday sentenced Wyatt, 39, to five years in prison after he pleaded guilty to assisting a hacking crew known as The Dark Overlord. Wyatt, who had previously entered a plea of not guilty, participated in a court hearing by phone from a jail in St. Charles County, Missouri. “I’d like to apologize for the role that I played in this,” Wyatt said, through tears, adding that he struggles with a mental illness that affects his decision-making ability. “I can promise you that I just want to go home to my family.
