Anonymous says it’s leaking hacked data from Epik, a right-wing hosting service

Members of the umbrella hacking movement Anonymous say they leaked information about a range of fringe websites after breaching Epik, a web hosting provider and domain registrar service, marking the latest update in a generation of internet activism from the group. Anonymous claimed in a series of posts they have released 180 GB of information, amounting to “a decade’s worth of data” about Epik, which has made it possible for right-wing clients including the Republican Party of Texas, the social network Gab, the Twitter alternative Parler and the extremist site 8chan to remain online. Leaked data reportedly includes details about domain purchases and website registration information about apparent operators of websites that promote militant ideologies. Epik has denied any awareness of a breach, and said it is investigating the claims. The news, first reported Sept. 13 by Steven Monacelli, represents the latest example of Anonymous — made up of self-professed […]

Cybercrime forum advertises alleged database, source code from Russian firm that helped Parler

A seller on a popular cybercrime forum appears to be offering up source code and a database they say belongs to DDoS-Guard, the Russia-based hosting site that helped right-leaning social media company Parler get back online after Amazon Web Services banished it. Parler billed itself as an alternative to Twitter after that social media firm cracked down on alt-right misinformation and disinformation, but found itself shunned by AWS and others after complaints about its safeguards against hate speech and calls for violence after the the Jan. 6 insurrection. Security vendor Group-IB, which noticed the listing, said that while DDoS-Guard offers hosting services and protection against distributed denial-of-service attacks, it also has been labeled a “bulletproof hosting” provider — one that’s lenient toward cybercriminals and other shady operators. The seller listed the DDoS-Guard database and source code for $350,000 on exploit.in, a long-running forum used mainly by Russian-speaking scammers that birthed […]

Misinformation flooded Parler around Capitol insurrection, research finds

The overwhelming majority of news links shared on Parler in the days surrounding the Capitol insurrection last month were filled with misinformation, according to an analysis by NewsGuard and PeakMetrics. In all, 87% of news links shared on Parler around the Jan. 6 riots contained misinformation, the analysis published Wednesday concluded.  One of the most popular sites shared across the social networking platform was a site that appeared to be an American news outlet, called American Conservatives Today, but which actually was run from North Macedonia and plagiarized stories from The Gateway Pundit. The site, which was created in December of last year, spread lies that the voting equipment maker Dominion Voting Systems was switching votes from then-President Donald Trump to then-candidate Joe Biden. Other popular misinformation-based sites that spread falsehoods on Parler included a video website linked with Alex Jones, InfoWars.com’s founder, which spread lies that Biden was interested […]

Rep. Maloney seeks FBI probe of Parler’s role in Capitol attack

The House Oversight and Reform Committee on Thursday asked the FBI to investigate Parler’s role in the storming of the Capitol earlier this month, and its possible ties to Russia. The committee chair, Rep. Carolyn Maloney, D-NY, also requested that FBI Director Christopher Wray order an investigation into the social media application’s financing, according to the letter she sent to the bureau. Parler has come under scrutiny in recent weeks after rioters used the app to plan and coordinate the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol Building. Apple and Google have removed Parler from their app marketplaces, while Amazon has ejected the site from its web hosting service over violent content. Maloney now contends the federal government should embark on its own probe. The FBI should “conduct a robust examination of the role that the social media site Parler played in the assault, including as a potential facilitator of planning […]

DDoS-Guard To Forfeit Internet Space Occupied by Parler

Parler, the beleaguered social network advertised as a “free speech” alternative to Facebook and Twitter, has had a tough month. Apple and Google removed the Parler app from its stores, and Amazon blocked the platform from using its hosting services. Parler has since found a home in DDoS-Guard, a Russian digital infrastructure company. But now it appears DDoS-Guard is about to be relieved of more than two-thirds of the Internet address space the company leases to clients — including the Internet addresses currently occupied by Parler.
