Nigerian email scammers upped their game, averaging 90,000 attacks monthly in 2019

A group of Nigerian scammers blamed for email fraud accelerated their attacks last year by attempting an average of more than 90,000 attacks per month. The hacking crew, dubbed SilverTerrier by security researchers, began around 2014 as a small group that experimented with easy-to-detect hacking tools. By 2019, though, it had evolved into a team of “mature cybercriminals” who have produced 81,300 malicious software samples connected to 2.1 million attacks, according to Palo Alto Networks findings published Tuesday. SilverTerrier specializes in business email compromise attacks, the kind of email scam in which fraudsters impersonate a victim’s coworker or friend, then ask for wire transfers. It’s a relatively unsophisticated technique that nonetheless cost U.S. victims $1.7 billion in 2019, according to internet crime figures from the FBI. Nigeria, meanwhile, remains a hotspot, if separate indictments against dozens of Nigerian citizens from November and August last year are any indication. The SilverTerrier group is partly responsible […]

Russian IRA troll farm outsourced new operation to Ghana, Nigeria

The Internet Research Agency, the Russian troll farm responsible for interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election, has outsourced its activities in 2020 to Ghana and Nigeria, Facebook said in an announcement Thursday. It wasn’t clear that the new behavior, which led Facebook to remove 49 Facebook accounts, 69 Pages and 85 Instagram accounts for participating in foreign interference online, was focused on elections or political candidates, according to the company. They tended instead to focus on U.S. news, black history, black fashion, black excellence, celebrity gossip, historical figures, and LGBTQ issues. But the links to the IRA were clear, Facebook’s head of cybersecurity policy, Nathaniel Gleicher, said in a blog post. “Although the people behind this activity attempted to conceal their purpose and coordination, our investigation found links to EBLA, an NGO in Ghana, and individuals associated with past activity by the Russian Internet Research Agency (IRA).” The IRA, which […]

Nigerian romance scammers swiped thousands of dollars from individuals, U.S. prosecutors say

U.S. prosecutors have charged 10 people with fraud-related crimes as part of a global romance scam in which people assume fake identities on dating websites to ask victims for money. Beginning in 2017, prosecutors say, the defendants worked with other conspirators who posed as U.S. residents working abroad. The scammers would at first would ask for small gifts, like gift cards or cell phones, and then ask for larger payments as the relationships evolved, all while being in Nigeria. The arrests in Oklahoma, New York and California nabbed suspects who moved money between banks accounts and protected the fake identities, prosecutors said. The indictment, unsealed Wednesday, comes as U.S. law enforcement continues to file charges in romance-adjacent scams. Business email compromise, one of the leading causes of cybercrime, occurs when thieves hijack a corporate email address and request monetary transfers, sometimes totaling hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars. UAE, Egypt, Nigeria cited as sources of latest information operations blocked by Facebook

Facebook has removed hundreds of pages and accounts spreading propaganda on behalf of marketing agencies in Egypt, Nigeria and the United Arab Emirates, in the latest takedown demonstrating how so-called coordinated inauthentic behavior is not just a tactic of governments. The company scrubbed 211 accounts, 107 pages, 43 groups and 87 accounts for engaging in information operations, according to a blog post Thursday from Nathaniel Gliecher, head of cybersecurity policy. Operators of the network relied on fake accounts to spread content, promote local news and generate engagement meant to increase interest in the UAE. The activity was linked to the marketing firms Charles Communications, in UAE; Nigeria’s MintReach; and a company called Flexell in Egypt, Facebook said. Facebook’s action was the result of an independent BuzzFeed News investigation that found the network after Facebook in August announced it had removed more than 350 pages and accounts operated out of UAE and Egypt. No more […]
