UK cyber agency launches review of Huawei presence in 5G networks

The United Kingdom’s cybersecurity agency is reviewing the impact that new U.S. sanctions on Chinese telecommunications company Huawei could have on Britain’s deployment of 5G technology. The review by the National Cyber Security Centre is welcome news for U.S. officials who have lobbied their U.K. counterparts to ban Huawei gear out of concerns over espionage. And it’s a potential change of fate for Huawei’s business in the U.K. after officials decided in January to allow the telecom giant’s equipment in up to 35% of the country’s 5G deployments — albeit not in the most sensitive parts of those networks. “Following the U.S. announcement of additional sanctions against Huawei, the NCSC is looking carefully at any impact they could have to the U.K.’s networks,” the NCSC said in a statement to CyberScoop on Tuesday. “The security and resilience of our networks is of paramount importance.” Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s office, according […]

Security incident knocks UK supercomputer service offline for days

Britain’s main supercomputing service for academic research has been unavailable since Monday following a security incident that forced administrators to reset user passwords. The ARCHER computing service, which scientists use to model climate change, coronavirus, and other societal challenges, likely won’t be available until at least next week as U.K. government cyber officials continue to help the system recover. ARCHER —  a set of powerful hardware and simulation software housed at the University of Edinburgh — recently made available to its users a tool for simulating the extent of the COVID-19 outbreak. Scientific data and know-how has been in the crosshairs of hackers during the COVID-19 pandemic as governments around the world race to understand and treat the disease. It was unclear who was responsible for the security incident. A spokesperson for the U.K.’s National Cyber Security Centre told CyberScoop the agency was aware of the incident and providing support for […]

State-linked hacking continues amid race for coronavirus treatments, US and UK agencies warn

Hackers linked with foreign governments continue to target multiple global health care organizations and pharmaceutical companies in a possible bid to gather intelligence or steal research related to the coronavirus pandemic, American and British cybersecurity agencies said Tuesday. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s cybersecurity division and the U.K.’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) “are currently investigating a number of incidents in which threat actors are targeting pharmaceutical companies, medical research organizations, and universities,” the agencies said in a joint advisory. They did not point the finger at particular governments. Advanced persistent threat (APT) groups, as state-linked hackers are known, have been scanning public websites of target companies looking for insecure software to exploit, said DHS’s Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and the NCSC. Hackers have also been using a technique called password spraying, which throws common passwords at targets until one of them works, to attack health care organizations in the U.S., […]
