A 23-year-old man who pleaded guilty for his role in helping Russian spies hack into email accounts was sentenced to five years in prison on Tuesday. Karim Baratov, a Kazakhstan-born Canadian citizen, was arrested in Toronto last year before being extradited to the United States. Prosecutors say he was part of a group working with two intelligence agents from Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB). Baratov pleaded guilty in November for playing a role in the massive 2014 Yahoo data breach. That breach saw information tied to 500 million accounts stolen from the company. He was also charged with helping Russian spies hack into 11,000 email accounts. Sentencing came later than initially planned after Judge Vince Chhabria told prosecutors last month that their request of an eight-year sentence seemed “way out of whack compared to most hackers.” Baratov’s lawyers were asking for a 45-month sentence. After further filings from the government […]

Sentencing was delayed in the case against Karim Baratov, the hacker who broke into 11,000 email accounts including targeting specific individuals’ email accounts for the Russian intelligence agency FSB. Baratov, a 23-year-old born in Kazakhstan, pleaded guilty last year to helping hack into Yahoo and Gmail accounts. Prosecutors described Baratov’s actions as directions from Russian intelligence officers Dmitry Dokuchaev and Igor Sushchin to target specific accounts of interest to the FSB. Dokuchaev paid Baratov to hack into at least 80 email accounts, including that of journalists, lawyers and senior government officials in Russia and its border countries, as well as “prominent leaders in the commercial industries” like banking and transportation, according to court documents. U.S. government officials and tech company employees were also targeted. Baratov, who was arrested in March 2017 at his adopted home in Canada, argues that he never knew the identities of the people he was working for. Judge Vince Chhabria began the hearing by saying […]

Roman Seleznev, a Russian man who is already serving a record 27-year sentence in the United States for cybercrime charges, was handed a 14-year sentence this week by a federal judge in Atlanta for his role in a credit card and identity theft conspiracy that prosecutors say netted more than $50 million. Separately, a Canadian national has pleaded guilty to charges of helping to steal more than a billion user account credentials from Yahoo. Continue reading Carding Kingpin Sentenced Again. A man pleaded guilty in federal court in San Francisco on Tuesday for his role in helping Russian spies hack into email accounts. Karim Baratov, a 22-year-old Kazakhstan-born Canadian citizen, was arrested in Toronto in March before waiving his right to fight extradition to the U.S. earlier this year. Baratov is charged, along with three other men including two intelligence agents from Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB), for a role in the 2014 data breach where information tied to 500 million Yahoo accounts was stolen. Baratov pleaded guilty to eight criminal counts including conspiracy to commit computer fraud and abuse and aggravated identity theft. American prosecutors say Baratov worked under the order and pay of the FSB officers Dmitry Dokuchaev and Igor Sushchin. When FSB targets had non-Yahoo emails, the agency allegedly paid Baratov to break into at least 80 accounts. At least 50 of the targets Baratov allegedly hacked used Gmail. The defendant’s lawyers […]

The U.S. Justice Department today unsealed indictments against four men accused of hacking into a half-billion Yahoo email accounts. Two of the men named in the indictments worked for a unit of the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) that serves as the FBI’s point of contact in Moscow on cybercrime cases. Here’s a look at the accused, starting with a 22-year-old who apparently did not try to hide his tracks.
According to a press release put out by the Justice Department, among those indicted was Karim Baratov (a.k.a. Kay, Karim Taloverov), a Canadian and Kazakh national who lives in Canada. Baratov is accused of being hired by the two FSB officer defendants in this case — Dmitry Dokuchaev, 33, and Igor Sushchin, 43 — to hack into the email accounts of thousands of individuals.
