U.K. confirms use of offensive cyberweapons against ISIS

U.K. Defense Secretary Sir Michael Fallon said Tuesday that his country is regularly and successfully utilizing offensive cyberweapons within Iraq and other areas under control of the Islamic State. “I can confirm that we are now using offensive cyber routinely in the war against Daesh, not only in Iraq but also in the campaign to liberate Raqqa and other towns on the Euphrates,” Fallon said, using the Arabic phrase for ISIS. “Offensive cyber there is already beginning to have a major effect on degrading Daesh’s capabilities.” The U.K. isn’t the only country to use offensive cyberweapons against the Islamic State, but Fallon’s comments suggest it might be having more success than others. The U.S. has struggled to tailor its arsenal of cyberweaponry to fight ISIS, which notoriously utilizes social media to recruit while remaining overall less technically advanced than its enemies. Social media also creates legal gray areas for U.S. agencies, potentially slowing offensive operations. […]

Pro-ISIS script kiddies hit Ohio state websites

Several state government websites in Ohio, including those of former Gov. John Kasich and his wife, Ohio First Lady Karen Kasich, were defaced over the weekend in a rash of hacking activity aimed at state and local governments claimed by Algeria-based pro-ISIS hacktivists. The defaced websites played the Islamic call to prayer and threatened President Donald Trump, noting that he would be held accountable for “every drop of blood flowing in Muslim countries” and ended “I Love Islamic state [sic].” An Ohio official told the AP that the hacks happened about 11am on Sunday, and the sites were all restored by Monday morning, as were most of the others struck. According to Zone-H, an Estonia-based site that has tracked website defacements like these for 15 years, the targets included government websites of Howard County, Maryland and other towns and counties in New York, Idaho and California. Zone-H preserved a mirror of the defaced Ohio governor’s site […]

U.S. cyber warriors are getting better at fighting ISIS online, says top general

The U.S. military has gotten better at countering ISIS’ digital operations over the last six months, according to Lieutenant General Paul Nakasone, commanding general of Army Cyber Command. “I think what we are learning is in terms of being able to counter a message, being able to attack a brand — in this case the brand of ISIS — and then, the other thing is, how do we do this with the speed and accuracy that is able to get at an adversary that six months ago was moving uncontested in cyberspace,” Nakasone said during a Senate Armed Services subcommittee hearing. “I think we’ve learned those things over the last six months. I think we as a department have done much better.” ISIS shares propaganda, communicates with allies and spreads other messaging via the internet. In the past, the group’s successful use of social media has been linked to terrorist […]
