Will Democrats share all cyber threat intel with Donald Trump in 2020?

Imagine this: Donald Trump’s 2020 presidential campaign and, let’s say, Joe Biden’s 2020 campaign working together closely on cyber threat and incident intelligence sharing. Every sensitive piece of information and forensics on hacking attempts passed between the two opposing organizations. Given what we know about the 2016 presidential campaign, the scenario seems like a longshot. However, it’s closer to reality than most would think. That scenario is one possible outcome of a newly launched project promoting an Information Sharing and Analysis Organization (ISAO) among U.S. political campaigns. The overall project, Defending Digital Democracy, launched in July at Harvard University’s Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs. This month, Hillary Clinton’s campaign manager Robby Mook and Mitt Romney campaign manager Matt Rhoades announced the ISAO as the DDD’s first priority. In the wake of the most high-profile campaign hacking in American history, it’s a critical security point that’s received a lot of support. The specifics — including the possibility of […]

North Korean hackers came close to hacking Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign

As part of a cyber-espionage operation against Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign, North Korean hackers compromised email accounts belonging to individuals involved with an East Asia-focused foreign policy advisory group, multiple people familiar with the incident told CyberScoop.  The North Koreans sought to acquire policy documents and other relevant information that may have affected the regime if Clinton were to become president, the sources said. The advisory group’s job was to craft such policies. The hackers were able to break into the email accounts of employees of at least one prominent D.C.-based think tank; some of which were involved with the East Asia foreign policy advisory group. These individuals occasionally communicated with staff of the Democratic candidate’s official Hillary for America (HFA) campaign, based on an incident response report obtained by CyberScoop and authored by security experts who worked for the presidential campaign. The attackers used their access to apparently draft convincing […]

Russian hacker group ‘CyberBerkut’ returns to public light with allegations against Clinton

A Twitter account tied to a group that the Defense Intelligence Agency recently described as “Russian hackers … supporting Russia’s military operations” returned to the spotlight Wednesday by posting a message that alleges multiple Ukrainian government officials are “sponsored” by Hillary Clinton. These allegations, a vague and loosely defined set of financial connections documented only in a single graphic, could not be confirmed. No other supporting documents were provided. An attempt to contact the group went unanswered. США планируют сфабриковать доказательства причастности […]

French presidential candidate Macron suffers ‘massive and coordinated hack’

The campaign of French presidential candidate Emmanuel Macron was targeted by a “massive and coordinated hack,” according to a statement from the campaign late Friday. A large collection totaling nine gigabytes of emails purportedly from the campaign was posted online less than two days before the country’s election in which Macron faces off against Marine Le Pen. Macron, who has accused Russia of cyberattacks against his campaign in the past, was targeted this year by the hacking group Fancy Bear, according to the cybersecurity firm Trend Micro. Fancy Bear has widely been linked to Russian intelligence operations and is one of the groups that hacked into U.S. political institutions including the Democratic National Committee and the Hillary Clinton campaign in 2016. Macron’s political movement En Marche! (Onwards!) confirmed that it had been hacked, according to Reuters. “The En Marche! Movement has been the victim of a massive and coordinated hack this evening which has given rise to the […]
