Here comes the storm: Fortnite arrives on Android, cybersecurity experts sound alarm

The world’s most popular game just arrived on Android in an unusual and potentially dangerous way. Fortnite is a cash cow of a video game. The free-to-play, first-person-shooter contest takes in hundreds of millions of dollars every month across computers, consoles and iPhones as users make a mountain of small purchases like new clothes or dance moves for their characters. Publisher Epic Games will now add the world’s most popular operating system, Android, to that river of revenue — and the company is angling to avoid the large 30 percent cut Google takes from official Play Store purchases by offering the game directly on the company website. The beta version landed on Friday. Fake ‘Fortnite’ apps for Android spread adware, cryptojackers and spyware

With all the hype around the wildly popular video game “Fortnite,” it should come as no surprise that people are taking advantage of the excitement to spread malware. Researchers with cybersecurity company Zscaler have uncovered a slew of Android apps posing as the official “Fortnite” app for Android. The various malicious apps’ capabilities include spyware, cryptojacking and adware, among other things. “Fortnite,” a multiplayer online battle and survival game, has about 45 million players on Playstation, Xbox, PC, MacOS and iOS. The company behind the game, Epic Games, has said that support for Android devices is “coming within the next few months,” but has not put out an official timeline. “A version for the Android mobile platform has not been announced, leaving Android users—eager to play this game on their devices—searching for it. ViperRAT spyware resurfaces in Google Play Store

One year after a hacking campaign targeted Israeli Defense Force soldiers, the ViperRAT malware family returned to the Google Play Store, according to new research from the mobile security firm Lookout. ViperRAT made waves last year after a wave of IDF personnel fell victim to social engineering attacks from hackers posing as young women, who tricked the soldiers into installing third-party apps that copied files and spied on communications. The malware relatively disappeared after intense media coverage, but the new samples look even more sophisticated — so much so that they’ve snuck into the Google Play Store. It’s not clear who is  being targeted or responsible for building the ViperRAT 2.0.
